When you got your character in 3dsm and the Valve skeleton, how do you attach the bones to the correct body part?
 
you use the skin modifier. Select your mesh (gotta be one editable_mesh with no modifiers stacked ontop) Modifiers > animation > skin. then you add your bones to the list in modify panel. then u gotta mess with the envelopes to get all teh vertexes matched to the proper bones. theres a tutorial that comes with max tells more about it.
