5.1 speakers wont work for any source games

I have had no problems with 5.1 in games like far cry, doom 3, and f.e.a.r. but for some reason when i try to play half life 2, cs source, day of defeat source, or any source mods, i cannot hear anything. any suggestions?

...Besides checking all the volume sliders and the audio setup selection in the options menu, I don't know what could be wrong :\

Maybe you need to validate the .gcfs with steam?

I think there's some kind of console command like sv_digitalsurroundsound that can be set to 1. Just type "sv_digital" and the console should suggest a few possible valid commands.

it says unknown command. edit: i just set it to 2 speakers. it works with the 2 speakers option.
