Ok, i managed to get my 5700 ultra running hl2 in dx9 using 3Danalyse but there seem to be quite a few artifacts (which the post said would not be there). I get objects randomly turning blue or green in dark areas and the occasional neon body. Does anyone have any idea if this can be fixed or not?

did you set the vendor id and device id to ATi Radeon 9800 Pro?

Your card can't handle the load of DX9 shaders and such - all you can do is to lower the settings and maybe even the actual clocks of your GPU. Latter choice would kill the performance even worse than forcing DX9 level shaders to work on that "crappy" GFFX though so I'd say you just have to face the fact that there's no point for you to run the game in DX9 mode.

This may or may not be related its up to you.

but im guessing you went with the DX9 set up for the sweet Water reflections?

if im correct i suggest you check this thread out:

you can get DX9 quality water reflections at slim to no performance loss. ALOt better performance wise than the Vendor ID trick.

Of course if your main reason was to get DX9 Glass, or Metal than this wont help you as its simply a water patch.

Yeah, give up trying to run DX9 with that card. The performance is so bad it isn't even fun to play. No amount of tweaking will give you good performance. The DX8 Water Reflection Patch works, but expect about 5% reduction in performance.

My recommendation is to ask Santa for the 6600 GT from Christmas.

ok thanks for the help guys. Looks like I better start saving my pennys :upstare:
