Well this is my first post. It'll prolly bore the hell out of you.

I was not aware there would be a half life 2, or even that source code and a compiled version had been floating around until today. It is truly horrible for dates to get pushed back again and again, I know. Try Nintendo for starters. I've been a die-hard Nintendo fan for over a decade, but you go where the games are, so you sell your crappy consoles and get a computer.

Shoulda realized this when I first played Castle Wolfenstein, Spear of Destiny and then later Doom. And yes even the original mods of these games, namely hacked up versions of .wad files so you could shoot Barney and listen to Beavis and Butthead say rude things.

Rise of the Triad was even more multiplayer dial-up fun. "Where are you?" - - "Over he'ere!" For those of you who know you should be laughing right now. My father played video games at work. Yup Alley Cat for x286. It was great; it had a boss key.

Enough nostalgia. Doing about 15 minutes of research yeilded two articles, both from Gamespy. One was on Doom3 and the comment by Carmack, the effect was "The game'll get done when it's done."

The next article that caught my eye, about the release of Half Life 2 was, gamespy reporting:(This is direct quote)

"So how close is Half-Life 2 to release? As mentioned earlier, Valve isn't giving out some mealy-mouthed "when it's done" crap -- they've drawn a line in the sand and announced a ship date of September 30, 2003.

Well IMHO that was a direct slap in the face to id. Kinda made my blood boil for a split second, but you hafta step back and take it as a whole. It seems the "When it's done crap" woulda saved thousands of fans great dissappointment, and everyone at valve a great big headache to push and get it done. I was thrilled to hear about the sequel and see some awesome mouth watering shots.

I realize these things are not thrown together in a matter of days. Try being an avid Nintendo fan waitng for THIER releases. You'd shoot yourself with all their delays from consoles to games to controllers.

The question as to whether or not it was intentionally leaked by valve should be ruled out. It's like an aircraft manufacturer giving the design of the wing to competitors. But everyone knows, eventually it'll be hacked and modded, and reassembled to another's liking. And then THAT will be the standard, the hacked and modded. NutraSweet anyone?

As far as the "we're gonna sue you" if they find someone using their code, it probably won't happen. Someone is using the code right now for a game or sub-routine for a game that will be releaesd in the future. I gaurantee it. Compile what you have of it and see what it does. Someone somewhere can use it. Compiled code is a bitch to decipher. Litigation may be more costly than seeking revenge on users of the leaked code.

I think what happened here is the Nintendo push back. Promising too much too soon. I personally can't wait to play both doom 3 and half life 2, but I couldn't wait for Zelda either and it was "just ok."

"To steal from one is plagerism, from many: research."

Let's hope that the code leaked leads to something similar to the "defunct" technology of the DoD: TCP/IP

thanks for listening to my ramblings and don't be too hard on the genius that hacked valve. Remember how crash helmets were invented.

would'nt valve of had hardware firewalls?,, can you hack through them, I thought they disguise your computer completely. i cud be wrong

in a homestar runners voice "BORING!"
but anyways.... i agree,,,,and im just looking forward to doom3 ......

The only reason why Valve named a release date, or for that matter ANY developer names a release date, is because gamers want to know it.
Id (and 3DRealms) didn't give in to that, that's good thing I agree. But where some other developers have shareholders that need to know when a game releases Valve developed HL2 indepedently so they have no shareholders. So naming a releasedate was stupid, but it's the gamers fault for always wanting to know a release date.

no Valves fault for giving one. people wanted a Solid Doom 3 release date but they didn't give it to them Id was smart. its like if a kid jumps off the monkey bars and breaks an arm. the Parent was their and should have been watching them. its the Parents AKA Game Devs fault for not watching them not the Kids AKA the fans.
