With the cool new possibilities with Source, how possible do you guys think it would be to create a world completly underwater. Something that resembles the game Aquanox.

should be dead easy tbh.

I was kinda thinkin that. I heard that the Hammer editor is similar to UED so I thought that the hammer might us volumes or something like that.

Just make it foggy, dark, bluish color and decrease gravity, instant underwater feel.

Even though decreased gravity comes with func_water ;)

And fog. Heck, could do it with the Half-life one engine.

yeah but by placing a giant all map sized water object it could/would cause problems in the map.. Faking it will allow everything to continue to be used without side effects.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I volume of that size would most likely cause some serious hang ups.

I think your right on the money, design some kind of light filter, add bubble fx, blueish fog, schools of fish and some underwater plant life that sways in the current.

Bubble effect out of mouth, hair pulled upwards, blueish tinted lighting, occasional sound effect.

hair isn't pulled upwards underwater, it just follows the movement of the head closer because its the least effected part of the body where gravity is concerned. So it'll only look pulled upward if you move in the right direction for that.

I am a certified scuba diver and Dark is right. Its actualy kind funny how the hair just kinda chills and moves according to your movement.

I think one of the things that will really give it that underwater freaky cool look is how the light comes through the water (or in this case NO water). And giving it that apearance of endlessness with the use of a fog.

If you fake it, you'll get a much nicer underwater effect (the water shader is all well and good, just not for this kind of thing) all your sprite effects will keep working, shaders will work fine, everything will, since it'll be nothing more than a regular map with heavy fog and bluish lighting

For the streams/beams of light through the water itself, easy fake that with a cone and a transparent gradient from black to white. Thats an old trick that still works surprisingly well.

For the hair effect and other things that'll behave the same way, you'd simply make them not very heavy, so they'd more or less just sit there in place and slowly move downward when left to their own devices, or be pulled along by something else.

bubbles n such, simple enough again.

Sound, again just using regular entities just underwater effects, like a dulled compressed echo of sorts. Add some random fish and plants

for the water surface far above.. just put that in the skybox along with a few animated rays of light to give the impression the surface is very far above. Would also then have the benefit of not vanishing in the fog, which why maybe not realistic i don't know, it would look better.

Then you add a character who swims underwater and has the ability to call underwater animals to his aid.

no.. _then_ you make an underwater sappy story voiced by actors with nothing better to do that year and cash in on the whole fish CG film thing ;)

Yeah a Finding Nemo mod! :P Or something more serious with submarines, like Aquanox as Yakuza said would be cool to. But would it be also possible to fake the effect of things that float, like objects filled with air? If you release them underwater, they move to the surface. I don't know why this would be interesting in a mod, just curiosity.

simple enough to fake that bit, just make them effected in a negative way, so that gravity wouldn't pull but would deflect instead

A mod like this, done well, would really stand out I think..

okay, oaky so here si what I am thinking.

You play as this small orange and white fish......

seriously.

You play the character Alishnar. Who is an elite Prince/Soldier of this underwater world. Then from the DEEP waters an enemy arises and strikes your world with out warning.

For some of the bad guys I have this picture of an ugly deep ocean fish guy, some of wich are riding on the backs of these really large ugly deep fish type of cretures. Kinda like how the Orcs were riding on those beast things in LOTR except it would be with really ugly deep water creatures.

Anyways you wage this war underwater, and you lean that the enemy you now face is an ancient creature, whos identity is found by you through forgotten prophetic documents. You also learn that this creature can only be stopped by a single weapon.

This uber cool Trident...

anyways the race is on, because know the enemies are trying to reach it first. So not only to do you have to deal with this war going on. but you must jouney to distant waters to find this weapon.

The game would kinda be like a fantasy rpg yet Underwater.

You would have Melee weapons as well as Magic. Your character would closely resemble that of a ranger...well kinda. You would also have the ability to tame and call upon other creatures in the ocean to aid you.

Example...Your hidding from two guards who are patroling a farly large reef. suddenly you see a "Great White" shark swiming in the distance. You cast a call spell to that creature, and if your lvl is high enough you can tame the shark.

Now that you have this new pet, you order it to attack one of the guards. The shark swims down towards the ocean floor, he glids over to the guards position, then CHARGES at him.

The shark hits him hard and fast, snaping him inbetween his razor sharp teeth. he enemies body tears in half and the shark swallows part of him. The shark then turns on the other guard who has began to stab him with his spear. The shark charges with out fear bitting into the upper torso of the other guard he fights with every ounce of his strength as the shark drags him off down into the deep blue.

For movement i really want to have this sense of gliding or flying. To say the least "graceful".
