About power source

I read in some other threads something about making sure that your power source is efficient enough to power the new video cards that run HL2 well.

I don't know much about hardware specs and the like, and I would like to know how one can check to see how good one's power source is, and whether it is over the recommended 400w, and if it' suitable for powering cards such as an ATI X800 pro, and other cards in that league.
