Steam is asking my friend for a the CD when he goes to activate CSS to his account? why? I thought that was the whole idea behind steam, to not need the CD at all.

Not if you buy retail, in which case it should be no problem putting the disc in as he should have it.
I believe Valve did that so people would not just copy the CD key in store, and go activate at home.
He only needs to put the CD in the activate, then that's it.

I thought the CD key was inside the box?

I thought the CD key was inside the box?

you need the cd in the drive so it can be activated. this is a new security feature added for retail games so people cant just take the cd key out and expect an install(this has happened to me but i caught it) once its activated then you should be able to download or use the cd.

I thought the CD key was inside the box?

Some people at stores were opening the box and copying the CD Key, as some stores leave the box on the shelve and only take disc out, but fail to remove the CD key.

Heh, the irony in this isn't lost on me.

But I thought these boxes were sealed?

Well, they can't be sealed if the CD's taken out of them, can they!

I don't recall any of my recent games being sealed. They take the case off you, go round the back, get the CD, stick it in and voila.

That's how my DVDs usually come, but I haven't had a game come wrapped up in god knows how long.

It depends on what store you get it from. I know some places like Asda open the boxes remove the discs and leave the empty packaging on shelve like Druckles said. That's why i buy games from Argos especially if it has online activation. That way i know it's not been tampered. I actually remember going to Asda and seeing the HL2 hoilday pack on the shelve, i opened it and sure enough the instruction page and CD key was still in it. I could have easily copied the code and activated at home.
