I was just wondering, could the advisors just be grubs for the "true" advisor? I ask this because so far, most all aliens have insectoid similarities. So, could they just be the first stages of their life cycle?

The idea of the Advisors is that they have regressed to a slug-like creature due to extremely prolonged technological dependence. The development they go through seems do be very small in terms of the physical and very great in terms of the mental. In essence, what you see is what you get.

Your sig Gormanmod. It freaking irks me..Care to explain yourself further? Because Portalstormzz was making some considerable effort already.

Ealier Portal had inadvertently said his password over a game of crysis, he was also putting up his rights to his movie n a bet. Now, I was the one making the 3d things in the movie, he was just the website manager. So, when he started saying he made those 3d models, acting like an ass, and claiming all kinds of shit, I hacked his movie site, changes the password, and put it on my email address. Then I also took his account away because he would surly blast shit on the forums. SO it's justice, cause the pirate-bastard-idiot got his reward. Now I have full control of the movie, and he is gone because he was LIEING. He's a baby anyway.

Owned.

Anyways, I agree with Avoidist. The advisors probably are the way they are. Didn't think of it that way. thanks.

Finally someone showed portal how much of a retard he was.
Good for you!

Omg lol. So that thread about portal having made all those models is a lie?

Advisors used to be reasonably normal looking aliens, even looked like humans maybe, until they developed their technology so much that they became completely dependant on it, making them evolve with no limbs, facial features or the majority of organs, all of this was secured through the technology.

I refuse to accept that the first breed of Combine were humanoid...

I hate how all Sci-Fi have humanoids for Aliens or even worse, people who are just Human with an odd tatoo on the forehead to show them to be aliens. =/

Yes. :hmph:

anyway, yea, I'm not to sure, but the fact that they were in pods made me think that they were like a catapila in a cocoon. Sure they're powerful, but they just seem too small for even a race addicted to tech. maybe fatter. I'd need to see their inside an, if they have one, skeleton.

I'm no biologist, but I really doubt you could "lose" things you've evolved, like limbs. Sure, they wouldn't fully develop (i.e. get stronger), but still.

I think they where always maggot like, just perhaps faster, or a different (darker) colour.

One thing that I want to be made clean is how the process of Combine Evolution has took place?

Well, their limbs and other previous traits could have become so vestigial to them they are now so small that they go unnoticed, like the pelvic bone of a whale. We have no idea what the timespan is of these creatures, so it is possible they simply evolved into this state.

well we know they've been around for a few thousand years because laidlaw said they were at war with xen for "eons" or something like that.

also, if they always were worm like, how could they develop anything? I think they were more human like at one time but turned into maggots, like the dinosaur filled in the niche of birds of prey when they changed to birds.

But the main topic was, is this their only life stage?

They weren't always worm like and they haven't developed anything. They have regressed. Pretty sure that was in RtB or implied elsewhere. There's nothing to say they aren't analogous to moths but at the same time it seems somewhat unlikely. If I had to make a prediction, I would say that they will always remain slugs. I don't have any evidence to the contrary other than saying the alternative would be cheesy.

Oh and just to make certain of something: if you think that regressing to a worm implies that they were once humanoid then you're definitely not thinking outside the box.

We don't know the timeframe of how these creatures came to be.

But it's quite possible that they engineered themselves to look like maggots. They might have felt that telekinesis > limbs.

Evolutionary scientist theorize that our pinky digits on our fingers and toes used to be larger when we were a younger species but have become smaller over time because they are not that essential. Likewise our big toes and thumbs have become thicker and stronger because of how much we use them.

It's called Star Trek. Comment has been made many times. But don't hate it, it's funny.

It's only done for the budget. You can't create a whole new facemask to illustrate a totally different alien, there are far too many. And you're supposed to use your imagination, anyway. You get the idea it's a different alien.

Of course limbs can be lost through evolution. Seals evolved from bears, and whales share a common ancestor with elephants. We know little about the Combine evolution, but I bet their empire couldn't have started if they were bloated maggots to start with.

The opposable thumb is one of the main reason for our success, without it tool making would be an impossibility. So the Combine at some point must have had a similar feature in order to start development. Then once they lost any need to work through machines and slaves, over God knows how many millions of years, they lost all physical ability. They can't even move without their pods.

What this does show beyond the reason for their appearance, is how long they have been a threat in the universe. Now they have gained immense intelligence, granting them telepathy and telekinesis. This had no impact on Dog though, since he is a machine. Wanna kill an Adviser, use a robot.

I was thinking the other day.

Telekenisis/Telepathic/Seeing-into-the-future (no name came to mind for this one) would all provide an immense evolutionary advantage. I was actually thinking in terms of the latter, seeing into the future. Sure, there are lots of attributes which would benefit, but these three would provide much more than your standard evolving would. If someone was born with armour plating (ignore the problems raised by this) and had a few children, sure he'd probably be less likely to die, but then in modern day and age, it's really not much of a problem. Another example, is they could be put to military use and kill each other off. But overall, it doesn't compare to something like seeing into the future or telekenisis. There are things which technology cannot shield us from which these things can.

Bit of a ramble, shouldn't really think, and it's pretty obvious, but yeah... too tired, should stop posting.

Oh, and we don't know their abilities aren't provided by their technology

Yeah we do. We've seen advisors without the carapace thing.

How do you know they don't have implants inside their brain?

well they lost their eyes, yea, but I doubt implants inside.

Also, their texture files imply they used to have eyes, but lost them. it's like this fish.

You can't prove that either way.

No, but I think a race as technically and biologically evolved as they are wouldn't hesitate to implant themselves.

We ourselves are reaching the state of bionics, including implanting chips into peoples' heads.

In Episode 3 we're going to learn they're like maggots in much more than just looks when Alyx and Gordon stumble onto a cocooned advisor. Their initial form is larval, then they go into a pupal stage.

Before you have a chance to "destroy it, Gordon!" at Alyx's behest the cocoon will crack open and reveal the advisor's true form:

Dr. Breen.

If I were at home, I'd sew Breen's head onto an advisor :p

You have Breen's head?

EXPLAIN WHERE HIS BODY WENT RIGHT NOW.

It was crushed by an interstellar package delivery ship. We did all we could.

I meant digitally. But yeah, I have Breen's head. I caught it before it was molecularised by Gordon.

Many creatures on earth through evolution have lost abilities. Penguins don't fly.... chickens don't fly (worth crap), But i'd bet their distant ancestors did. Humans even evolved in order to lose a prehensile tail, which young human embryos still have the little nub left.

And I'm sure there are tons of other creatures who lost abilities through evolution as well.
