Hello,
I've formatted my windows partition recently and I am having trouble with my Steam.

I have formatted my windows partition which only contains windows data and my HL2 + other mods were in other partition.

After format, I attempted to run the Steam in my hl2 folder but it would try to download all the mods again including hl2

So I downloaded all the mods again. But when I tried to run any hl2 game, it would "try" to load(steam window saying Launching game.. etc) then it would do nothing after that.

does anyone have some kind of solution to that?
and If i were to fresh install(if there were no solution) what files should I backup so I do not have to redownload all the MODs again?

You only back up files that are yet installed, things like Executable programs, the ones you have installed have to go and leave PC just like Steam.

What I do is that I have second driver for storage, and every executable program that I would like to keep and not download again goes to that drive, and if I have to clean install Windows, I just open that drive and install those programs again.

It is hell of a shorcut.

Good Luck.

I do not have executable install files as I have downloaded all the mods off Steam. so it is "ready to play" without installing it.

OK, now I get it. sorry for Yakety-Yakking.

Did you try to re-download and reinstall those mods through Steam?

Because whatever you have installed before you formatted disk (doesn't matter if you saved them) won't work on Steam, you have to re-download everything again. If I'm correct.

I have re-downloaded all the mods including HL2(for some reason).
Now, they are all "100%- Ready" in My Games tab on Steam.

When I try to run any of the games, I get a Steam window with msg "Preparing to Launch whatevergame..." then window goes away and I get nothing afterwards.

And this is soemthing I've noticed few moments ago, when I formatted, all the partition letters were changed.. (C:\ D:\ E:\ would be something else)
so I tried deleting ClientRegistry.blob in HL2 folder and re-running the Steam.
But the problem would stay the same.

Any solutions are welcome :)

Check your firewall. Do you have and use a firewall? Steam have to have full access to internet.

I have turned all the firewalls off etc and it still is the same.

You turned off all firewalls including Windows Firewall? OK.

Hit Star, Control Panel, System, advanced, Performance, Data Execution Prevention and hit Turn On DEP For All Programs And Services Except Those I Select, Hit Apply, OK and Reboot, Launch Steam and let me know how it goes.

Also while you at it post your system spec. including DX version.

I'm gonna do a little work I'll be rights back.

Good Luck.

due to hardware design, my computer'sp orcessor does not support DEP software. (options are grayed out)

my system spec:

pentum4 2.4c
512 dual chan ram
radeon 9600pro
Direct X 9.0b

Have you tried deleting the platform.gcf in the Steamapps folder?

Ok, so I just formatted my windows partition again and did a fresh install of hl2 + steam
when I tried to play the game, it attempted to dl HL2DM:S and HL2.
I thought, HL2DM:S is obviously needed so it's downloading and HL2 is probably for updates.
so I downloaded them both and I still get the exact same problem when I tried to run the game.

so I am pretty frustrated atm. I wish there was a way to get this thing working.

oh btw, do i need to download Source SDK from Tools tab in steam?
