All my CD Drives blew up!

Let me start by saying that i have absolutely no clue what happened

Anyways, all of my CD/DVD Drives are not visible. BIOS detects them, but when i go to My Computer, no CD drives show up. I then go to device manager and both of my CD drives have a little Warning sign next to them. It says

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Funny thing is, the computer doesnt even recognize the virtual drives either, so im 100% sure its not a hardware issue. I tried uninstalling the drivers, and then reinstalling, but it comes up with the same error. Im pretty sure its a driver error (see Code 39, but i have no clue how to fix it.

I have tried doing a system restore but it didnt work. And yes, i did try rebooting

any help would be greatly appreciated

What OS are you on?

I suggest uninstalling both of them and seeing if windows picks them up on the next reboot.

Or is that what you already did?

A reformat should fix it but that might be extreme.

i am on windows xp, im going to try that now

edit: did not work. i rebooted, then as soon as it popped up, it started adding the devices automatically. It says that the device has been installed but may not be working properly

Well you could try rolling back the driver and making sure the IDE cable did not come loose.

Have you tried uninstalling the driver and then right clicking in the window and scanning for changes?

Also have you gone through the troubleshooting wizard?

the IDE cable is not loose. I have trued uninstalling driver and clicking scan for changes. The troubleshooting wizard shows up a blank screen when it comes up

One more thing to consider, now, is some sort of conflict with Sony's DRM and information gathering (AKA: spyware) rootkit that comes with all of their music CDs made after April 2004, IIRC. It's required to use their proprietary player. Also, it has no uninstaller. If you put a Sony CD in your drive and a dialog comes up, hitting OK or Yes (whatever) installs their software which then hides itself on your computer as something normal-sounding like "Plug and Play Manager," makes itself load even when you boot into Safe mode, and can potentially be used by hackers to make their virus invisible to scanners once they manage to get it on your computer. In addition to trying to prevent copying... it also gathers information about the music you're playing and reports it back to Sony. One of the side effects is that it can occasionally cause your drives to disappear. Then, to fix it you have to narrow the problem down to playing a music CD (not an obvious cause to most people), search for information about it, and install a special service pack for the rootkit that also happens to make it harder to remove and/or bypass. That is, of course, if you're stupid. If not, you find a third-party remover for it then boycott future Sony products until they back off.

It may or may not be the issue... but I think everyone needs to know about the kind of crap Sony is trying to pull.

Off Topic: woa woa woa, I never knew that about the cds. Well, to hell with them, ill pirate cds made by them then.

Back on topic: I had this happen to me once before, but it happened after a virus. I did a virus check and spyware check, deleted what showed up, and then reinstalled windows. Worked fine after that. I think maybe you should just try a repair installation of windows.

Yeah, check for virus and spyware.
Have you actually tried a different IDE cable? What was the most recent thing you installed? If you put a CD in them and restart the machine, do they spin up?

yes they do spin, and remember that the bios detects them fine.

I would be suspiecious of hardware if it was only 1 CD drive but this is happening to
A) My internal IDE CD Drive
B) My External USB 2.0 DVD Drive
C) My Alcohol 120% Virtual drive

That Sony DRM thing only cripples your CD-Drives if you delete it
It basically adds dummy drivers for Windows to run first for your optic drives

Takes somebody who has a degree in computing to know how to get rid of this, takes more than a simple registry edit.

Check what drivers are loaded for your CD Drives. Right-click the CD Drive in my computer, properties, Hardware, select the CD Drive, Properties, Driver and then Driver details.

well the Sony DRM didnt have anything to do with this, however i have solved the problem. Heres what i did:

NOTE: THIS DOES INVOLVE REGISTRRY EDITING TO MAKE SURE TO DO A BACKUP!

1. Click on START button, the click on RUN

2. Enter REGEDIT and press enter

3. When REGEDIT starts, open up the following folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Control

Class

{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

4. After clicking on {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} you should see two settings on the right-hand side:

"Upperfilters"
"Lowerfilters"
Click on each of them, press DELETE and click YES.

Glad you sorted it, but something to bear in mind is something really easy:

Go to Device Manager, double click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers", then right click on Secondary IDE Channel, click uninstall, click Ok and then reboot the machine.

This will remove the secondary IDE controller, and all drivers it uses. Generally much more effective than just removing the individual drivers for the drives.


This may not have resolved the problem, then again it might have done if removing the controller actually did the necessary stuff in the registry for you.



EDIT: In fact, Deemo. Do me a favour... Do a Windows XP System Restore back to a date before it was fixed. You should find that they stop working again but don't worry it's completely reversable. Now try and fix it with the way I said... I'm intrigued.

Then, if it doesn't, go back even further to before it stopped working the first time. I bet a simple System Restore would have fixed it. (Especially if related to registry issues).
