Hello,

I recently built a new system

Athlon X2 4200
2gb ram
x1900xtx
x-fi

Thing is, game runs good on max settings, however, im still getting a little sound/video hitch every here and there...woudlnt call it stutter exactly, it lasts like less than half a second but you still notice it......

I dont know if I should expect complete smoothness from the game or thats just the way it is...

Maybe someone with a system on the same level of mine can tell me how it is for them?

Thanks

Assuming you've got all the latest mobo/chipset and video drivers, you're just being paranoid.

Either the last remnants of the stutter bug, or just the game being the beast it can be.

Are we only talking about HL2? I'd say the game's just like that in some places, nice setup though :O

yes episode 1...

sorry, ive never had such good system, and ive never spent so much on one either...so thats why i ask these questions........

I believe the Steam filesystem is constructed that way - it loads sounds during run-time. You probably seen a soundache folder somewhere. This file stores a second or two of all sound files, so Steam can load the whole .wav or .mp3 file without clicks or pops. Unfortunately, this can result in a tiny stutter sometimes.

What hard disk do you have? Is it fast enough? Is it defragmented (not just the game cache files which you can defragment through Steam)?

You can try playing with the -heapsize parameter.
By default, Source games use 128MBs of heap size. Since you've got 2 gigs of RAM, you can safely increase this value to 512MB or even 1024MB.
You enter the value in kilobytes, ie:
-heapsize 512000
Maybe I'm wrong and it's entered in bytes, then you should enter something like:
-heapsize 512000000

hi

can you tell me which file (and location) i find this 'heapsize' setting for HL2 ep1?

rhanks

just right click the game in the steam list, select properties and then launch options...then put -heapsize and the bytes you want to allocate...multiply half of you ram by 1024...

for example, if youve got one gig, multiply 512 times 1024, which is 524288, then add in the launch options -heapsize 524288

didnt solve anything for me tho

cheers, i'll give that a go. Going to update the drivers for my onboard sound too. Makes me wonder if this happens with the X-Fi cards, which i imagine have a little more of their own poke, than the standard fare.

This usually happens to me when I quick-save the game, which is like quarter of second length stutter.
