I got a card (geforce 5500, but the GO laptop version) that runs HL2 fine, all the drivers installed, works on all other games. Problem is, that when I run HL2, some of the shiny stuff (some windows, some glass, combine consoles, etc) have a white film over them. But, for some reason, only sometimes. I've seen some combine consoles be fine, and the same exact type later on is covered with film. This wouldn't be a problem if all the combine structures weren't like that in the later levels (the cididel). It happens in Guild Wars too, if thats relevant. My only clue as to what may be causing it, is that there are a few CS:S maps that I load, which have the same problem with windows, it says " 'dustfilter' not valid"-" 'dustfilter' not found". For the sake of it being "not found" I re-installed from steam three (3) times. It didn't help. When I played around with settings, I fixed some things, but when I changed it back, more things where affected (the garage doors ). This is true with CS:S, when the garage doors are fine on "cs-office" but not on other maps, even though it looks like the same door. I had an Idea it could be the memory of the card, but it ran the video test and aced the spec test on an auto-test site I found (I don't remember which).

Sorry for the longness, but I am trying to give everything I know. Also, if anything doesn't make sense, please ask me about it. I'd really like to play
HL2 without these problems and all the mods that follow. I heard about this site from a friend, who said it helped alot.

I'd really like to kill this problem :sniper:

You just wanted an excuse to use that icon, didn't you?

That's really interesting issue, I'd concur that it sounds like a video memory issue... I'd try software called PC-Check, from eurosoft. It can do explicit tests on video memory, and I've used it to diagnose cards as well. Beyond that, if you have the latest drivers and DX installed, I don't know what to tell you...

Well, if it happens in another game, it probably isn't the fault of HL2 or Steam. As funkyFlash suggested, update you DirectX and graphics drivers to the latest version.

Pretty much ^

Yeah, thanks for the reply, PC check, eh? I'll look for it. I really don't know what the problem is, my bud has the same card in his and it doesn't happen there...it just worked. I don't know much about computer problems really, so...I guess I'm screwed unless something new comes up, or someone with the same problem helps me...hmm...google search was pretty useless, even after 20 pages, so i dunno, I'd hate to upgrade when everything works well, but its been awhile anyway...

I fixed it!!! w00t!!! anyone else who has this problem, here is the link to the fix guide -

http://www.tweakguides.com/HL2_10.html

The "Boost Nvidia Cards" section fixed my graphics error!!! And I thought It wouldn't be fixed...anyway, If you got problems and want to tweak it, that guide helped me. Found it by accident, and fixed it. Although I havn't run into anyone with the same problem, just in case....
