Anyone know of a technique/tool in 3dsmax similar to valves weightmap import/export?

I've always wondered if this is possible in max, I tried copying the skin modifier but that doesnt work since when you import the character model I think the weighting gets baked into the vertices and naturally the vertex #'s dont line up

What are you trying to do? I dont quite get it?

You want the mdl export to keep the vertex weighting? You want to export weights from one model to another? Or from one model to the same model because your weighting buggered up and you cant be bothered to redo it?

I'm not actually trying to do anything this is more of a hypothetical discussion

I was messing around with the XSI Hl2 version and there was this cool weightmap import function (under the valve tools menu).

I didnt think something like that was possible and wondered if it's at all normal to see it in other 3d programs, seems like quite a nifty feature.

In max you can copy and paste wighting but of course that only copies over the envelope range (doesnt include vertex inclusion/exclusion), I'm not super well versed with XSI so it was hard to tell what the weigthmap import/export was doing exactly..

advantages to this though could be like, if I were to make another similar model in the future, then concivably I wouldnt have to weight it from scratch
