ok people... ive heard lots of people saying im getting a AThalon64 when it comes out and they're saying there gunna get a huge improvement... id like to point out one thing... unless the software you are running is 64 bit it wont be able to take "full" advantage of it...

most software is still 32 bit... and running 32bit software on a 64bit cpu wont make your programs run in 64bit... only 32bit with a slight improvement not award winning improvements...

so um stop saying it will!

um...I would think the reason most ppl are saying they are going to get one is by looking at the benchmarks...
so far the benchmarks have been in 32bit mode.
64bit advantages have not really even been shown yet.
AMD64 offers much more performance boost from how its designed than from 64bit so far.
:-p

Time to do some reading up then TheRook. Especially check out the benchmarks for the games...

With the nForce 3 running Opteron at 2.0Ghz with a Radeon 9800 PRO, we had the platform to give our readers a decent preview of Athlon64 performance. So how will Athlon64 likely compare to the best Pentium 4 CPU’s and current Barton processors?

http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1856

The official benchmarks probably will be released around the 23rd of september

From the bit I read they had the slowest of the athlon64's running at 2GHz I think it was, and it got almost 27,000 in 3DMark2001. And that is without it being used to its full potential as the program is 32-bit. That is still pretty damn nice.

how much more will they cost compared to the 32 ones?

wow...

*beings eating his hat*

its changed since i read up about it 3 months ago...

that is one hella performance!

People ranting and Raving Go buy those damn sweet cpu's!

i know when im wrong...

but you gotta admit its so hard to keep up with all the technology in the world nowadays...

I would love to see a link of that. 27,000 is amazing, especially considering it's the CPU that's making the difference.
Actually, it sounds impossible.

well 3dmark01SE actually takes cpu into account :)

Even more surprising is the performance of the A64 level Opteron on Gun Metal 2. This DX9 benchmark is an up-to-date gaming benchmark that shows the Opteron out-performing P4 and Athlon 3200+ by a whopping 42% to 54%. As we continue through Unreal Tournament 2003, our Opteron running at A64 speed is the clear gaming champion at 12% to 19% faster than number 2. We also are experimenting with the new X2 Benchmark as an addition to our gaming suite. X2 is heavy on Transform and Lighting effects, and therefore, adds another dimension to game benchmarks. The 2.0 Opteron was also the best performer in X2, but not by the margins we see in other game benchmarks.

these chips are meant for servers for now.

In maybe 2 years they will be the standard of home PCs, like 16 bits were way back when.

then like 5 years fron now, 128bit, then 512, ect ect

Opteron is 64 bit and cost more then any pentium so dont expect to get one soon. (2,200.00 from newegg)

Opterons are the server version, the desktop version(Athlon64) is launched this month and the prices they're talking about are around the $500 mark. It probably wont be too long until they're more affordable CPUs, probably into next year, hopefully they'll make for a smooth transition into 64bit since their 32bit performance is also pretty damn sweet :)

No problem and thanks for the link. That's still an awesome score for such a low clockspeed!
