This is pretty much common sense but i just realised this.

GS: Will it be possible to build mods for Team Fortress 2 right after it launches?

RW: In fact we intend to ship the SDK (software development kit) for Team Fortress 2 before we ship the game. People should be making mods before we release Team Fortress 2, I hope. We should be talking about that sometime soon.

That was part of an interivew with Robin Walker on 11.10.00

They announce HL2 5 or so months before release and people start making mods, that was the plan. I think there are like 2 or 3 mods for TF2 but i think all progress on those have stopped along time ago. That means prolly once HL2 is released an update on TF2 will be out and a release date...hopefully. So they will then give it 4 or 5 months until January or February 2004. And you all know if they dont release HL2 on September 30th or right after then TF2 wont be announced for along time. They aren't going to say shit about TF2 until HL2 is shipped...that is their main priority.

hehe....its a bad habit ..i say tfc2 sometimes to...dont be to hard on people when they do it :)

Yeah they confused the hell out of people with the "classic" thing.

You should, it's still quite popular. It's a fun MP mod without all the 1337 stuff that CS has.

well if you consider that both games use the exact engine (as far as anything official goes) it would be a logical deduction that whatever mod happens to run on HL2, would most probably run on TF2 as well (that is if there are people out there that would actuallly forgoe the hl2 experience)...
CS became a standalone product and still runs all the other mods.. that would be an example of what I mean.

Especially now all these years later, people probably weren't even aware TFC wasn't the first TF...

Ah that takes me back..... I have a lot of fond memories messing around with mods for the original quake.. in all it's software rendered pixelated glory... those were the days..

It's quite simple.

Team Fortress was a MOD for Quake
Team Fortress Classic was a MOD for HL1
Team Fortress 2 is now it's own game on HL2's engine.

the only thing that owned was TF ... the sniper had those nifty red dots...can't wait for TF2 though :)

Funny how classic was only the second in the series. How can you have a "classic" version if you never had a new version in between?

I don't know what you mean... what 1337 stuff?

That's a good point. It's not like it's some kind of big throwback, casting off the layers of complexity given by generations of alteration. So... classic compared to what?

the worst possible mistake to make in the HL community is to call TF2 TFC2. it results in massive flaming and possible eviction, if not death

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's saying "Gordan" or "Gorden" instead of "Gordon".

its called classic because they were developing tf2 as an in house mod for the hl engine and had all sorts of things planned for it.
While we were waiting they got bored and converted tf1 from the quake engine to the hl engine with some tweaks, they never intended tf1 to appear on the hl engine.

TF2.

Gardon Freeman is my hero.

/me dons fireman's garb.

TFC2 will be the mod created when everybody says "I want TF2 like TFC was!!!" so they try to recreate it.

And making the simple a bit more complex:

- Team Fortress was a mod for Quake 1. While the numbers all across the board were smaller, by all means it was the "Counter-Strike of Quake".
- Team Fortress 2 was announced for Quake 2, hundreds of fans bought Quake 2 just to play TF2.
- Valve buys rights to Team Fortress.
- Valve announced TF2 to be free HL addon.
- Half-Life ships, hundreds of fans bought Half-Life just to play TF2. (see a pattern?)
- Valve announced TF2 to be stand-alone retail games. Many fans pissed.
- Valve creates TFC to appease angry fans until TF2 ships.
- TF2 makes like Amelia Earhart.
