I just got done loading the game and spending 6 days waiting for the updates (Unfortunately I have a 56K internet connection). I played in off-line mode and all was well. I even cliucked the option for no automatic updates in the properties. Yesterday I upgraded my HD and tried to retore the game from the original HD, but the steam account info wants to update the game again. What files did not get restored to get me back to the original config I was playing?. Is there a registry tweak i need or a config file I did not copy back?

Any help would be appreciated, I'm hoping I don't half to wait another 6 days to complete the update.

The files you need to backup are the GCF files located in Steam/SteamApps. You can use the 'Steam backup' feature (right-click on Half-Life 2 in Steam and select BAckup Game Files) but it's proven unreliable for some people. The better way in my opinion is to just copy the GCF files to CDs or a DVD.
