Becaue its easier to do research and sell a game/mod on "true to life accuracy" than it is to write a convincing storyline and "invent" plausable and useful weapons/equiptment.

People see movies or read about battles or hear about them, they then want to play a game replicating it. The problem is that games based on movies usually steer towards replicating the movie rather than the real story (despite what they may claim).
