The H.E.V was MEANT for hazardous environments ya know.
Maybe the reason he did take damage from hazardus waste and stuff was that the Mrk.4 of the suit didn't have the helmet. Or maybe the one Gordon ha didn't (judging by the fact that the bodies on xen did).
