Buying a Horse?

I bought one for 500 gold pieces, can't remember what town it was though. I can check it out later.

The horses pretty much stay at the area you left them at so I would recommend that to ride to a stable (every town has one outside the main gate) and place them there. Of course you can always just take them with you, but beware when you are riding into a dangerous area because the enemies prefers to attack the horse instead of you which is kind of weird.

Oh and If you fast travel to a location, the horse comes with you.

I stole one that was worth 500 gold. Now when I get on it there isn't any steal icon anymore.

Just warp to any stable on the map and they usually sell the 500 horse.

BTW, can you name your horse? My Black Horse isn't exactly the coolest name for my steed.

I stole a horse and he kept walking off to the Imperial City everytime you left him, no matter how far away from it you were.

Yeah, all stolen horses eventually work their way back home.

Doesn't bother me too much, my character's already faster than the horses anyway.

In Cheydenhal er whatever I think. If that's not it talk to any stable owner about their horses. They always seem to mention, "The only faster horse is a black horse from blah blah blah".

Just follow the main quest and you will have a beautiful horse in no time, for free! When you first meet Jauffre, be sure to talk to the other monks as well and you will get a beautiful steed. It's not very quick but it's a trusty old horse that will help defend you when you get into trouble.
