I got my Radeon 9800 AIW Pro today. Shipping was faster than normal, and I haven't finished backing up my system before it arrived. I'm currently running a Geforce 3. I can't expect nVidia or ATi to prevent a mixup in drivers between the detonators and the catalysts, so I'm reformatting when I'm installing the new card (I recommend most of you guys to do the same, if switching GPU chipsets.) Once the new card is in, the system restored to new, and all the drivers up to date, I'll be ready for HL2...
Now, unfortunately HL2 is delayed (this thread isn't about that.) I'm dissapointed with the news, but I had ordered the video card specifically for this release. There were other factors as well (recent price trends, and the controversy over detonator drivers, etc.) but the real motivation was the HL2 release. Now that it's delayed, we can breathe a sigh of relief for those of us scrambling/waiting/saving for an upgrade. For all of us though, it must give a reality to check to see how dedicated we are to these games, and more importantly, what kind of power the game companies hold over the consumers, and vicariously over the hardware developers.
Here's the poll: Has HL2 (or other major upcoming release in the next 3 months) influenced your hardware purchases? This can be in any area; monitors, graphics cards, CPUs, more RAM, etc. How much power do we hold over what trends are followed in both software and hardware?
