Can you run hl2 without running steam?

I really dislike steam. Its one hell of a resource parazyte for an ugly application like it is, and it annoys the hell out of me when it runs while im playing halflife 2, which isnt at all superfast as it is. Is there a way to run halflife 2 without steam running in the background?
