Can't connect to steam

I've had this problem for two days now, whenever I open steam (or play any source game) the Updating Steam box appears, and then after a minute or so of nonactivity a message saying "Steam is temporarily unavailable, please try again later" appears. I can't validate either because of this message.

Hmmm... I heard this had something to do with Steam servers, and the solution was to delete the clientregistry.blob or something. I could be wrong, though.
