im trying to make maps for half-life using hammer, but everytime i press run, it compiles fine, but then it wont run saying it needs a dll file. thanx for your help in advance.

You should post the full compile log when asking about compilation problems.
It sounds like one of these:
- for Source, you need to run the Source SDK's "Reset Game Configurations" tool;
- for Goldsource, you haven't set up Hammer properly--the game must be run via steam.exe, not hl.exe.
