you would think 'Maximum Distance' in smartedit would let you choose how far the light goes, but it doesn't do anything for me. is there any way to get light to stop? it reaches a far room thats supposed to be darker, and i need it to not do that

Maximum Distance is quite misleading. For some reason which I am quite sure I will never be able to comprehend, it only limits the distance from the light at which .MDLs will be lit.

Quadratic, Linear, and Constant, though they can be more difficult to use, control falloff. You can also use blocklight brushes.

It is a very good explanation but it could use pictures. I saw a tutorial a while back that used them.

i read the tut. and it says setting quadratic to high makes the light drop off quicker but still maintain brightness. i set it to 1000, my light still travels about 500 units to another room

well for now, ill use those block light brushes ,they are kinda nifty heh

Actually didn't notice who wrote it, it's just the only place that has had an explanation of the lighting like that.

Ive seen another that had ingame pictures, it was combined with an explanation of the lightmap too. Pretty informative.

When I wrote the tutorial, I was only concerned with the mathematical ramifications of the system. And, for the most part, I'm still only concerned with its mathematical ramifications. I rather prefer the simplicity of the Old System.

Furthermore, because I lack great coding skill, I can rely only on observation and the (probably flawed) assumption that Valve followed standard quadratic/linear/constant convention ;)

Still helpful none-the-less (wee hyphens!)

i followed the tutorial but i can't get any tangible results, anyone have an example of values that work? and why is quadratic set to 1 by default?

In the math problem a value of one does not affect the rest of the calculations. I think thats how it works anyway.

Quadratic is set to 1 because, well, Valve do weird things a lot. It would make more sense to me to have Linear set to 1, now that I think about it.
