Can't play

Whenever I try to play half life 2 it stays at the loading screen for about a minute then it says half life 2 has encountered an error and needs to close. Then I get another one straight after saying: Application error half life 2: hl2.exe. Half life 1 gets to the loading screen and stays there. It might come up with an error, I'll check later. Gmod 9 gets to the loading bit and then gets the application error again but it says: Application error gmod 9: hl2.exe. I can play online with deathmatch on HL1, HL2 and CS:S though.

We'd like the hardware specs in your computer, so we better know what kind of stuff you have.

Oh yeah sorry. I can play Half life on deathmatch but not singleplayer so it can't be the specs.

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: AMD Sempron(tm) 2400+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.7GHz
Memory: 256MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200
Description: Vinyl AC'97 Audio (WAVE)

If you need the whole thing just say.

wait wait.. you can play half life 1 deathmatch, and you cant play hl2? There ya go.

256MB RAM? I'm surprised WINDOWS runs properly. It uses ~180MB just to sit idle, so you have about 76MB available to you to try and run a high-end game, and do anything else that is running, like a firewall, anti-virus, etc etc. I'm sure you can see the problem. I'm not saying this is WHY the game crashes, but you will ALWAYS have problems and terrible performance on that system.

Tis a terrible system, yes, but you can run HL2 easily enough on it.

Validate your game cache on Steam.

Right-click the game in the My Games list, pick Properties and Local Files, then Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

I verified Half life 1 and 2 but there's still no difference. Half life 2 gets to the loading screen and stays there for about a minute then it comes up with Half life 2 has encountered an error and needs to close. If I click close it comes up with an application error but if I click debug I don't get the application error but it doesn't make any difference. Half life 1 just stays at the loading screen. It was there for about half an hour. (I wanted to see if it was actually loading and no it doesn't take that long to load anything, I just had to do something.) I can't use the task manager to exit either because it doesn't come up so I have to restart my pc.

I know the RAM is bad but when I get the chance to upgrade it I will  .

Well Half-life 2 has a mapped background, so the error could come from the fact that you don't have enough RAM to load both the background map and necessary game files into the RAM, and so it crashes.
There would be no fix for this apart from buying more RAM if that were the case

I'm 100% sure I can play. Im open to suggestions but im going to mess around with the folder for a little.
