Hey i just bought retail HL2 
As installing i openned steam. Logged in.
HL2 then asked me to register a cd key and after entering and clicking next it said please install from disk first (i was heartbroken)
So i checked th forums seeing others had probs. SHOCK.
But i uninstalled, selected "save password" on steam and logged out and exitted.
Then installed hl2 and let it tell me to register, BINGO!
Just hope it helped.
