"I can confirm that Maskhadov has been killed in the Chechen settlement of Tolstoy-Yurt. An armed clash took place in the settlement. Maskhadov was hiding in a bunker underneath one of the houses in the settlement," Interfax quoted Ilya Shabalkin as saying.

Thoughts?

For those who don't know, Russians consider Maskhadov somewhat akin to their own personal Bin Laden.

yeah i already know that putin sees this guy as thier 'Osama'.

well im not entirely sure this will improve relations at all, its jus gonna cause another beslan attack. :(.

its a good thing in a way, because he was responsible for the horrible actions at the russian school back in september.
but im feeling anxious about this.

more info about it

chechen spokesman said:
The resistance will continue, no doubt about it!

i seem to believe this might fire up more chechens to join the rebellion.

In Soviet Russia, terrorists save you from the Government!

Things have come full circle for him. Thats what he gets for killing children. I hope he, and his terrorist buddies enjoy the same fate he did. Though I dont like Putin, theres nothing I hate more than terrorists, especially child killing monsters like him.

In Soviet Russia, road forks you!

Putin has to deal with the same problems we do, and he deals with them accordingly. I think he gets a bit too much hate, good to see a monster like Maskhadov dead.

Agreed, Maskhadov had it coming -- children being killed? Yes. He definately had it coming.

we should shouldnt kill this people. we should take them prisoner so we can publicly execute them. him just dying isnt oing to stop anyone, but people seeing a cage full of rats strapped to his head will make future t's think twice

Oh really, what are you talking about... ;)

Yes, "Moscow has blamed Mr Maskhadov for a string of deadly attacks in Russia, including a rebel attack on a school in the south Russian town of Beslan last September in which more than 330 hostages - half of them children - died."

Moscow has blamed ... Hmm... And you believe it so easy???

Basayev was it for sure, this with Beslan, not Maskhadov.

Aslan Maskhadov
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aslan_Maskhadov

"In January 1997, Maskhadov was elected President of Chechnya on a platform including demands for independence from Moscow."

"Maskhadov's position became increasingly insecure as he gradually lost control of Basayev, who created a network of militias and warlords across the republic. Maskhadov found himself the target of assassination attempts mounted by Basayev and his allies."

"He was seen as the political leader of the separatist forces during the Second Chechen War. It is unclear what kind of a military role he played. He consistently denied being responsible for the increasingly brutal terrorist acts carried out by Basayev's followers since 1999, and often denounced them through spokesmen abroad. While some Western observers considered these denunciations plausible, Russian officials considered them insincere and have always accused both Basayev and Maskhadov of colluding to perpetrate terrorism."

Well, he's dead jim dead -- now lets see if the brutality stops against defenseless civilians. :P
