this may have been posted somewhere else and if so then i appologise.

the combine have got their massive, dark fusiion/energy portal dont they. thats how they get to earth.

in nova prospect you find their xen relay portal, is this their newest creation, because were told that once they get her theyve got to use existing transport??

so whats the xen portal for??

The Xen relay portal was developed by Kliener, Eli, and Mossman. It's not Combine technology, they don't have anything like it for local transportation, the Combine are only able to punch through from one Universe to another.

The portal in Nova Prospekt is a Combine portal which Mossman was working on, so she adapted it to be able to function as a Xen Relay.

Samon, I don't think they did. The portal storms were caused by the Black Mesa Incident, they were a series of uncontrolled portals between Earth and Xen, the Combine came from another place entirely.

It's not strictly canon, but in "Raising the Bar" there's a short segment about how the Combine got the Citadels in. They teleported a chunk out of a city, then teleported the Citadels in. It's likely they used a very, very large dark fusion portal, very much like the one in the Citadel.

The Xen relay portion is very much not a Combine creation, the Combine doesn't know how to build one. Now that the one in Nova Prospekt has been destroyed, they wouldn't be able to build another.

Yes, i thought that, but i just imagined the combine making use of the situation and sending the citadels in, and judging from what was said in Raising the bar i thought it backed it up.

And yes, if they didn't use the storms then they used a heckuva portal to get to earth.

The Xen portals that Eli, Kleiner and Mossman created allowed teleportation throughout Earth,. The Dark Fusion Reactor only allowed inter-universal travel. The Combine had only just begun using Xen technology as seen in Nova Prospekt.

To my understanding, this is how each of the portals work. Enjoy these 5-minute images I made:

Combine Teleport directly from one Universe to another. This requires an enormous amount of energy, and a lot of machinary, e.g. Dark Fusion Reactor.
Old Black Mesa System They need some kind of "point" in Xen. Doesn't require a lot of energy, as Xen is used.
Xen Relay (Kleiner/Eli) Uses Xen as a "dimentional slingshot". Doesn't require a lot of energy, nor a "point", like Black Mesa does.
Xenians Use the Nihilanth to teleport. To get to different locations on Xen itself, they might use energy from nearby crystals, rather than the Nihilanth.

And just because information is cool and all, the Xen Relay teleportation is said to use entanglement.
