They wanted players to jump into the action and experience everything first hand instead of spectating like they have since E3: 2003.
But still, the one only thing I actually hate that they didn't have was I wanted a longer train ride, to experience the exact same thing as with BMRF, to ohhh and ahhh at the place, and then find out how the place is run and how it works.
I was also disappointed with the first strider battle but that's for another thread.

Lets face it, they removed an absolute shit-load of stuff. Almost all of it sounded excellent. But I try not to think about it, it makes me sad/mad.

Alas, We never knew thee :'(

and lets face it, there will be no HL2: Deleted Scenes.

oh, yeh, Assassins, pity.
Why don't you just chuck in some more random maps and say it would be better. Those maps weren't included because it either affected the flow of the storyline or they weren't even meant for the game in the first place.

Yeah, might be a similar deal to HL1. Personally I loved the train ride intro into Black Mesa, and felt that it sank me nicely into the atmos of the game. However at the same time I remember loads of people complaining that it was boring and too long and they wanted to skip it.

Maybe Valve was didn't want to leave even more ammo for nitpickers...but at the same time, leaving the backstory untold also leaves more room for personal interpretation. But it looks as if that may have backfired too, what with all the threads saying "Yeah, I just finished HL2, wasn't really paying attention, does someone mind telling me what was meant to be going on?"
There are gamers that just want to run through the game, play with the physics and blow stuff up. These are the people that complain that "the so-and-so level wasn't in the game, so it sucks!". Frankly, it ruins it for the gamers that want a good immersive experience. Valve has to accomodate for all player types, so it's just a matter of finding a balance between the different types of gamers.
