Hey all,

My computer worked great yesterday night, but when I turned it on this morning it makes the one beep (good), goes through the dos screen (good), but before the Windows load screen comes up, it restarts (bad). This cycle continues over and over again.

It still responds in the DOS menu. I've tried starting it in safe mode with no awail. In the BIOs menu, it still recognizes 1GB of RAM and even after defaulting the BIOs settings, it recognizes all the drives (hard drive and CD-drives).

I have a 9800 Pro. All the fans still turn (Graphics Card, CPU, etc etc).

Now, you great sages of this forum, what do you think the problem is? Any advice would be greatly apprechiated.

It's a fairly new power supply (3 months old). It's 550W (or maybe 500W). I'm not at my busted computer now, but it was one of the top sellers at newegg.

that doesn't matter - you aren't getting enough power to get past the startup page, simple as
Check your connections, check your fuses, check the mains supply

Can you set windows to do a check disk (Chkdsk)on startup? There are also other tools when you boot to the windows cd.

How do I access these programs if Window's won't start up?
It restarts sometime when it is loading windows, right? Have you tried hitting F8 and going to MS DOS prompt? Or booting to the CD drive with the windows cd in the tray? If it still restarts then it is something else. But if you can get to the tools on the windows cd then you could try to use checkdisk.

It restarts before the Windows loading screen (ie: I never see that screen). I can get into the DOS prompt. I'll try loading the Windows CD (is checkdisk just the repair function?).

Easy to tell if you are getting proper voltage from your power supply by checking in the BIOS. Disconnect some nonessential peripherals like CD drives and sound and see if it starts up. If it does, then it is obviously the power supply.

Try like Asus said first, then try this.

eh i dont think its the power supply at all. i would think its more on the lines of something corrupt in windows. have you tried hitting f8 like asus said and go into safe mode?

Yep, already tried safe mode. No luck, same issue. Just keeps restarting before the Windows loading screen.

The question is how do I run CHKDSK and FIXBOOT, as I cannot load windows.

load up with your windows xp cd then when you are in the install you will see install xp and restore. you click restore and it will bring up a console then use those commands that were listed.

Swap out your RAM for some known good RAM. This is just a diagnostic step if you haven't found solution yet. It's easy to rule things out by swapping parts.

How long have you been using this machine?
