STORY
((If you don't feel like reading a five page story, just head on over to my second post.))
The nineteen-sixties were a busy year. Rock and Roll would take the hearts of youths across the world, questions involving race and rights in America would form, and what would lead to a major military muckup would launch in a small South Asian country. Just a few short years earlier, the human race saw the first man-made satellite thrown into space, complements of the Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik. Now it seemed everyone had their eyes pointed towards the sky. Just what WAS out there in the so called “Space”, and what could it be used for?
While President Eisenhower dismissed Sputnik at first, it would become obvious that Russia was winning the Space Race, and America just couldn’t stand for it. So, with full approval, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration would be created, and America would launch headfirst into the race with their eyes set on land – the Moon.
But it wouldn’t be until Nineteen Sixty-One that Russia would stumble upon the Gold Mine of the Space Age.
It started innocently enough, as everything does. Soviet Russia had it eyes in Siberia, poking and prodding around for signs of oil and other needed resources. As their eyes and tools came upon the great mountain ranges of Siberia, something seemed off. While the surface of the area was quite normal, it was a few feet under the ground that sparked interest from the Government. It seemed that quite a few passageways snaked around the mountain, leading to one large chamber.
The CCCP was quick to organize an expedition to the area, knowing nothing more than the fact that it was a hole under a bunch of snow. Some believed that it was a natural phenomenon, possibly a volcanic formation. Others believed it was an NATO spy base, and discovery of it would lead to certain Nuclear War.
However, nothing would prepare Russia for the shock they were in for.
The passageways were certainly artificial, illuminated by long, bright sources of lights that seemed as thin as paper. However, the largest surprise would be the “Main Chamber”, which held technology that was obviously alien. Surprisingly, signs of life were lacking – it was as if everything that worked there had just up and left, leaving everything behind.
However, it was the device that dominated center of the room that would determine the future of Soviet Russia – and Earth.
To the causal eye, it was nothing much. A raised platform with wires going every-which way, and a large grate hiding an even larger amount of electronics under it. Four large poles extended on each side of the rounded-edge square, forming another square above the machine. In fact, it was very cube looking.
However, it was the instructions for the machine that made it odd. It was in a language no one on this Earth had ever seen, but was also translated into Greek, English, Roman, Latin and Cyrillic. While the instructions were very plain worded, it allowed the Russians to start the machine with no explanation on what it actually ~did~.
When started, the various poles spat and sparked, and the room darkened. However, the machine whirred to life, suddenly projecting the room in a deep blue glow.
It was Abram Dimitri that was elected to see what it was. Slowly, he eased his hand into the wall of bright blue…
And quickly brought it back.
Everyone rushed up to him. While his hand was red and sore, it was obvious that he was alive. The sensation he explained was “As if every atom in my hand was being pulled away.”
This was later attributed to the vacuum of space, where this machine led.
In a complete turn of events, the Russians had stumbled upon a teleportation device that would take them directly to space. No rockets involved. It was clean, efficient, and most importantly: secret.
In the timespan of eight hours, the Russians won the space race.
As it would later be revealed, the various computers in the cavern held schematics for not only teleporters, but deep space exploration devices and even large ships that could venture out into the stars.
It would be an entire year before the Russians announced that they had manned platforms orbiting the Earth, as well as a fleet of Nuclear Armed starships. And like the kids in the sandbox with all the toys, they weren’t sharing.
There was a planetary outcry. The United States would threaten full scale nuclear war unless the plans for these “Unbelievable Vessels” were given over to NATO. Many believed that Russia had achieved no such thing, lying only to get ahead in the so called “Space Race.” But then, as people pointed their telescopes towards the sky, they could see the Russian platform. They could see the ships and smaller rockets.
They could clearly see that the USSR had won.
As would be expected, there was a major public outcry from all NATO nations. No one wanted to sit down and let this happen. Many people, even those in power, urged President Kennedy and those like him to launch a preemptive strike against the Soviets, as it would lead to that anyway.
A major meeting was called, one that could possibly change history. In the end, thanks to some quick negotiations, the United States ended up with the plans for a small Inner Solar Space Vehicle.
Thanks to this, the Cuban Missile Crisis would never happen. After all, why have missiles somewhere on Earth when you can have them hovering above America?
And thus, time would pass. NASA would establish a small fleet of ever growing Space Vessels, and would accomplish it’s task of landing on the moon, and Russia would continue to keep it’s grip around Earth.
Twenty years would pass with little incident. America would still be forced to pull out of Vietnam, and Russia would continue to flex it’s military muscle around Earth as well as the sky above.
In fact, it wouldn’t be until February Twelfth, Nineteen Eighty-Six that everything would go to hell in a few short hours.
Not much can explain what happened. In one moment, the entire Soviet Space Administration (Referred to by most as the “Red Star”) would simply disappear in a large burst of energy. Within mere moments of discovering this, the Russian leader would launch a full nuclear attack against America and her NATO allies, exhausting every bit of their missile caches before being pounded into Nuclear Oblivion.
Those lucky enough to be a part of the North Atlantic Space Federation project would witness the complete oblivion of the planet Earth, snuffed out in a nuclear flame that would cover the planet.
However, this did not concern them all that much. Plans to colonize the moon had been well under way, leading to livable conditions. It would not be for another year that those few people would realize just what this nuclear war had done.
It was not obvious at first, nothing really is. However, those who watched the stars and obsessed over how the universe worked would notice something was wrong.
The Earth was no longer on it’s original axis, and was slowly drifting off course.
Two things were possible. It would either regain orbit closer to the sun, which could possibly be catastrophic, or it would drift into the sun or off into space.
None were desirable answers.
Suddenly everyone became concerned with what to do now and how to escape the impending disaster. Slowly, their eyes settled upon what and why the Russians disappeared years earlier, and how it happened.
It was at this time when they discovered a Warpgate, aimlessly drifting in orbit around Earth.
It was slowly obvious what happened. The Russians constructed another gate for one reason or another. When it fired, it managed to take the entire Space Core to parts unknown.
And it seemed to be deliberate.
Now the people of the NASC had a choice. They could follow the Red Star into parts unknown, with possible death, or they could stick around and face a firey oblivion.
The choice was painfully obvious.
And so, it was documented on April Second, Nineteen Eighty Eight, the NASC formed every available ship around the gate and fired up the Warp Engines.
What the NASC saw next was what could only be described as “Every color possible surrounded us, stretching from the brightest light to the darkest black.”
They were traveling across time and space.
However, the warp was not instantaneous. In fact, it would take almost four years for the NASC crews to reach their destination. During this time, advancements in living conditions and weapons would continue to be made. Some out of necessity, but mostly out of sheer boredom. With such, the designs for the Main Battle Rifle Mark Zero Zero One would be completed, as well as the designs for an entire fleet of modern vehicles, including the “Scott Battle Tank” (Named after it’s creator Scott Vietten), a new version of the Apache Attack Helicopter that utilized high powered “Hydrofans” instead of rotors and an entire line of hypothetical uniforms and side arms.
Years would go by, and the exit of warpspace would be as cut and instant as the enterance was.
Suddenly, what unfolded before them was a solar system that was much unlike Sol. Each planet gained almost the same distance from their own sun, creating an oval shape. In front of them stood a massive blue and green planet.
They were hailed. The messenger spoke a heavily accented Russian.
And for some reason, it almost seemed normal to those aboard the NASC vessels.
However, they were not greeted by Russians, but by a race of bipedal cainines and felines. By accident, they stumbled upon the planet “Camanis”.
Misconceptions were quickly cleared up. Years before, the Russians had, in fact, arrived in this solar system, their arrival point being at the planet “Camanis 02”.
The story of Camanis 02 is a rich one, as is the story of all those who inhabited Camanis. Ever since the occupants of Camanis came out of the primordial soup, they have had their eyes pointed towards the sky. As such, when the populations of the world reached every single area that they could on that world, preparations went into traveling across space to other worlds. As it would appear, nine out of the eleven planets in the Camanis system would be hospitable without any sort of modification.
As such, weapon systems never evolved beyond what could be called the “World War One” point. However, interracial tensions would grow. At one point, a Reptilian Race inhabited Camanis, going by the name of “Hassainian.” While there had been tensions since all three groups learned to walk on two legs, things reached a breaking point in the late Fifty Fifth Space Year, when a rebel group of Hassainian attempted to assassinate the leader of the Camanis Confederacy of Planets. While the rebellion is quickly snuffed, this was not enough. Everyone saw every Hassainian as a potential terrorist. They were corralled up, and shot off to the most remote planet possible, a desert planet with no name.
Curiously, some add, while some the lupine Cammnis decided to go with their Hassainian brothers, none of the Feline Chanians followed suit, possibly showing that a prissy, self centered feline attitude was not restricted to Earth only.
Four years (Earth time, Camanis years last only eight months) later, the Soviet Space Federation would stumble upon an oppressed and undergunned people sitting on top of a supply of natural resources that would make some US Presidents drop in shock.
The peoples of Camanis 02 adapted the Communistic System like small children eager to please their parents. The SSF started founding factories and mines, and went to work designing and developing the weapons of tomorrow.
Suddenly an entire army appeared out of nowhere, attacking and dominating every CCoP planet they landed on. While the CCoP honored it’s trench clearing armored vehicle as the pinnacle of a modern army, the Communistic forces rolled in with an evolved T-80, armed with AK-74s and a seething hate for those who oppressed them.
The “War” lasted four months. At the end, the CCoP was forced to sign an armstrice that bound them to their own planet, and revoked them of any rights of holding a standing army.
Oh how the tables turned.
It would be six years later that the NASC would arrive in the Soviet controlled space. However, when the Russian Space Federation discovered what had happened, they greeted the NASC with gifts and praise, not weapons and death. However, the NATO soldiers did not feel the same brotherly love. While the Russians were happy to see other humans, the NASC was quick to explain the fate of Earth, and just why they were at such a location.
The happy mood was squelched.
However, the Soviets were quick to give the NASC their own planet, letting them colonize Camanis without any trouble. The NASC obliged, obviously having nowhere else to turn. And with that, the Soviets lifted their watchful eye off of Camanis, feeling everything would be under control.
And it was. For a while.
The years would pass, and life would seem normal. NASC would establish a republic on Camanis, falling under the term of “Republic of Camanis”, with the evolution of the Camanis standing army and the Camanis Republican Space Core.
Annually, the Soviet Space Federation would host a conference to discuss the current standing of the solar system. This quickly degraded into a standing humiliation of the Republic, with the Soviet chairmen quick to show that they had control and that Mother Russia beat all odds. As each year passed, the Republic and all that fell under her became more and more frustrated with their Soviet Overlords. Each year, taxes on oil and other natural resources increased, keeping Camanis in eternal poverty.
Or so the Federation believed.
Secretly, the Republic started developing a standing army, keeping it hidden on the three moons that orbited Camanis, refining the materials on those celestial bodies as well as the meager scraps taken from the Republic.
It was when the tax on oil reached ten thousand credits a gallon that the Republic struck.
With blinding speed, Republican warships descended upon it’s two neighbors, attacking with such a speed that Russian Federation had no chance to counteract.
The Russians acted as fast as they possibly could. However, with a major portion of their own army on the home planet of “Red Star” (Refusing to be referred to by Camanis 02) they would be slow to act, allowing the RSC to take two more planets
It was obvious. The result of the following war would seal the fate of the Camanis Solar System forever.
