Earlier this evening, Valve announced the prize pool for the DreamHack 2013 Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament, which is set to take place during the DreamHack Winter 2013 event between November 28th and December 1st 2013. The prize pool, which sits at a cool $250,000, was announced as the first "community-funded prize pool", thanks to funds generated through the purchasing of in-game keys for "eSports Weapon Cases", special unlockable crates released with the Arms Deal update over a month ago.

The cases function similarly to Team Fortress 2's crates and Dota 2's chests, potentially providing players with rare items in exchange for a key purchased in a micro-transaction via an in-game store. Allocating a portion of the revenue from the sale of every key has allowed Valve to generate the aforementioned DreamHack prize pool, which currently stands as one of the largest tournament awards in Counter-Strike's long and expansive history. Valve plans to continue supporting upcoming Counter-Strike: Global Offensive events through the same crowd-funding initiative, hopefully allowing for some even larger prize pools in the future.

If you're looking for more information regarding the prize pool or the event itself, head on over to the Counter-Strike blog and the DreamHack front page, available at the appropriate links.
