Ok this has only seemed to start recently, say a day or so.

What happens is just randomly I guess, the audio when it plays begins to crackle, enough to make it unbarable. I first noticed it playing those lenore flash anims. Then noticed it happening in cool edit pro. BUT, and this is what threw me. I could still play audio through WMP9 and it didn't crackle atall, it sounded just fine, but go back to playing audio in anything else and it continued doing it.

It only crackled while the audio was playing, and from what I could tell the crackling was only coming through the left/right speakers as were the other sounds, not that thats much help. It made me think at first as if it was coming through too loud for the speakers, only it wasn't as the same files played fine in WMP9 even turned up. It wasn't the speakers as I tried another set and it still happened the same as above.

Rebooting did stop it and they play fine again, but im guessing it'll happen again eventually.

All drivers appear fine, and none of the files seem to be using any strange codecs for the audio. I thought it might be interfearance from something else, but again the fact sound played fine in media player meant that couldn't have been the cause. Same can be said with the hardware, if it was doing it in one thing it would have done it in them all if that were the case.

Anyway has anyone else experienced this? Or something similar. All drivers are uptodate, except the ATI drivers which I've kept at 4.7 I think because later ones seemed to be buggy for me. Audio though is all uptodate as are other drivers.

It's just a strange problem so if anyone recognises it and knows what might be the cause lemmie know. It does from what I can tell seem to be a software issue though, but where?.

Probably sounds stupid, but have you reinstalled your sound card drivers? I had similar problems, crackling and hissing - I just re-installed the drivers and I've had no problems since.

If you have tried that, well - just wait till all the know-it-all's get here :p

Nope not tried that yet, waiting to see if it happens a third time and try see if there's something common to all three times (which so far seems it could be flash related) though I have recently been getting something popping up saying some type of codec was past its trial or something, one of those dumbass divx types, so im wondering if it might have been that which was trying to play sound through itself and failing. Uninstalled that anyway so if it doesn't happen again I'll put my money on that.

Would be much simpler if it was just an all over crackling whenever and in whatever the sound was played, but it seems to be something WMP9 does that plays audio differently than the rest of windows. But yeah until it happens again and I can try find out whats triggering it I won't really know. I just hope its not the motherboard (onboard audio) don't fancy pulling everything apart to replace it :(

I'm guessing sound card drivers or a sound codec got corrupted somehow.

Did you download divx player with the optional install of the divx pro with 5 month trial?

J/w cuz I didn't think the regular joint would expire. You can uninstall it completely and re-install. Next time say "no thanks, just install divx, I don't want the divx pro trial.".

Anyway, just throwing this out here, sometimes there are so many things that could be the problem, it's hard to troubleshoot, but since you mentioned divx, I figured I would remind you of the obvious.

Like I said, the divx pro trial includes better quality "codecs"?

Its quite possible this is the cause.

Actually, you said it happened 2 times?

So I guess not. Good luck.

theres still a kazaa codec pack or something out there.. its not a part of kazaa, but it was made by kazaa users to help them view all the various movies.. try searching that maybe?

yeah i could give it a go. The Xvid one was the one popping up with errors saying its trial period was over, and since the sound hasn't screwed up since getting rid of it im beginning to think it was the cause. Not a bad thing really since the video's that needed it I don't have no more ;) hehe
