this has been discussed many times before hl3 is the episodes. valve chose to do episodes because it will be out quicker but in small portions.

But it would be kinda wierd if they called the thing after HL2: Ep.3 HL4, it would make more sense if its called HL3 then. This is assuming the story continues after Ep.3

I think pretty much the rest of Half-Life will be in the episodes. There will be no HL3 or 4.

No, we'll definately be seeing a full Half-life game somewhere down the line. Once the Episodes wrap up the HL2 storyline, which is essentially HL3 in a sense, Valve will be free to explore new things - and that they shall.
Newell has already confessed that he expects people will want a fully fledged game following the eps.

i would actually like to see valve start a new project that is in a totally new universe besides the half life universe. thats one of the reasons i am so excited about portal.

If there is another Half-Life game I really hope that it stays as 'you play the role of Gordon Freeman' & I hope all the HL2 characters will make their way to a new Half-Life game, but the protagonist ..IMO must be Gordon Freeman.

half life 2 supports both dx8 and dx9. to have full dx10 support you must have windows vista. plus what is the point of making that big an upgrade to an episodic game that takes 4 hrs to finish?

There is a great different between Dx9 and Dx10, even greater than that between Dx8 and Dx9.

I mean that Portal being in the HL universe will not matter very much for it's not related to the current HL Episode arc which makes it more fresh, and interesting to some.
