In anticipation of Oblivion, I decided to grab my copy of Morrowind again and reinstall.

I never got far in Morrowind and didn't know much about it when I got it from my friend. All I really remember was being horribly lost in the game and seeing some guy fall from the sky dead and get his spell book flinging me through the air just like he did :P

I don't have the expansions or anything and I'm wondering what mods are good to install and what kind of tips you guys have to get into the game as an archer of some kind.

Make sure you use all the "Better" mods (better heads, better bodies, etc).

The best tip I can give you is to constantly check your map and explore as much as you can. Doing this will eventually give you a better idea of where things are and how to make sure you don't get lost.

Once I was no longer getting lost so often the game opened up a lot more for me. Also experiment with fighting different baddies, see what you can and can't defeat early on since it will give you a good idea of where you can go at an early level.

Finally don't get discouraged by how little you know about the world and the game you are playing. It really does take a lot of time to figure out exactly what is going on.

As for tips on becomming an archer I can't really help you, never tried to be one before.

whitezero or anyone, do you have a list of 'essential' mods for general improvement, like hearing rain inside houses, better models and whatever.

preferably no 'misc' or 'useless' ones, thanks. :)

I'm not trying to be an ass or anything but honestly, if you don't have any of the expansions forget about Morrowind.

The expansions are essencial to the best mods (especially Tribunal). Stuff like new ambience and more NPC's (the game really is very empty when non-modded) and animals, new sounds, new textures (the game can turn in to something beatifull with these)... All those need the expansions to work.. So my advice is, if you really are getting into Morrowind, buy the GOTY edition that brings all the expansions and then go to this site:

It's were the best mods are listed...

I've played a bit of Morrowind, but didn't even get to the part where the guy falls from the sky. I heard it's right at the beginning if you know where to go. Well, I didn't, and started doing some quests in towns and messing around. Got bored and stopped playing. I remember the stupid set of questions you could ask the NPC's, like "what's your secret?".

QFE, If you want the best mods... I'm afraid you'll need the expansions...
They're not too pricey nowadays, I would think.

I bought the original Morrowind for 9.00€ a month ago, and last week I discovered the GOTY edition with all the expansion packs for only 6.00€ >.<

Well morrowind actaully took 6 retries before i actually got on track and followed the plot, its quite fun... well its very fun... well... you know...

i have both expansions. :o

i'm starting to go through the mods on that link.

See, that's exactly how I couldn't get into the game in the first place. Without mods or the expansion the game felt very empty and I wasn't compelled to do much. I explored around a bit, died from some big huge monsters, stole a REALLY expensive item with no place to sell it (no merchants I could find had nearly enough), then I just kept getting lost since I had gotten so far off-track.

Get:

Morrowind Visual Pack 1.1
Morrowind Visual Pack 2.2
Morrowind Visual Pack XT
World of Faces
Better Bodies
Atmospheric Sound Effects ('tis a bit unstable [crashes], but I love it)

Anyways, I started a new character this weekend... I'm trying magic, which I've never done before. I made him join Telvanni because I've never done them before. It's a lot of fun. Also, join a bunch of Guilds and join a House because they give you missions. Talk to people, also, they give invaluable info about where stuff is.

My last guy was virtually indestructible. I loved him and I had explored most of the map.

By the way, they key to enjoying the game as a first-time player is to follow the main quest. Go to Caius in Balmora and start the main quest, it sends you all over and you start to get familiar with the lay of the land.

As a seasoned player, I know where most things are, so it's not hard for me to get a grand of gold in Seyda Neen first and then stop by the Treasury and break in (I know where the spare key is). I'm trying something new without doing that stuff because it gets boring if you know where everything you need is.

I have the Game of the Year one on the xbox so I get all the expansions. But since the game is huge I kind of got lost in it :'(.

The trick to starting off is doing the mages guild quests till you steal all the gems. Then hop over to creeper and get rich as hell.

Killing Ordinators by Vivec is great too. Kill one and you get like 20k worth of gear only paying a 1k fine.

But wear the armour, and you're not patched, and Zing! Vivec guards attack on sight, ALL THE TIME!

That takes some leveling though.

Also in balmora in the back gaurd tower(one by caius or w/e the main quest guy is)

there is a dresser with a gaurd next to it in the top of one. You can hide behind a pillar and jump up and there is an awsome sword on top of it you can grab.

I got the GOTY edition today which includes both exp packs. Do I need to install any patches? I am not gonna use any mods yet. And where do I start? Just with the main game or with one of the exp packs? I am a total n00b to this game.

Shakermaker I would grab the newest patch and then proceed to do whatever your heart desires. That is what is great about TES games is that you don't have to follow the main quest at all.

This game is so extensive it's freightening. Made myself a character, a warrior to keep things simple. My race is the most human one, Breton if I remember correctly. After arrival I cleared out a cave near the stiltrider post and got loads of booty. The salesman in the village first didn't want to barter with me tho. I had moon sugar and some potion that could get him in trouble. Why's that? Anyway, I stored the stuff outside, did my trading, and picked it up again when I left. I headed of to Balmora, I found Gaius Costades, and I now have to do some freelancing. What will I do? What do I need to focus on? Are there any specific things I need to know? No spoilers please.

Oh and concerning the patch: you only need to download Bloodmoon patch on the official site.

Seriously, the game is just too loose. I've been playing on it for a while now and I've been progressing with loads in the main quest, but I still feel so insignificant :(

What do you mean? I don't get it ....

I'm using another computer(crappy laptop) while my main is undergoing repairs... it got weird cookie settings so the "rememebr me" check box wasn't checked...which in turns mean that the long ass reply I was typing got lost because time spent typing is time spent idle apparently and while I was typing the forum descided to log me out. and I couldn't be bothered retyping the whole thing again imediately after. so no reply for you:|

;( please?

lol are you terribly terribly lost?

otherwise I would naturally repost at some other time...it's just that right after the incident I got a little pissed...I hate typing long replies only to have it dissappear because the forum thought I was idle...

Just go join up with the Fighters/Mages/Thieves guild, do their quests for a while till you get to about lvl 4/5 then go back to Caius.

The fun is finding stuff out for yourself so can't really say anymore than that. :D

Is it safe for a level 1 character like me to just wander around?

ok let me atleas give you a little help with a short reply:

no.

:P

generally for the first couple of lvls stay near the beaten paths and near the bigger cities, avoid entering bandit lairs, ancestral tombs, dwemer ruins or deadric shrines. if you want dungeon crawl stick with kwarma mines, sewers and some caves, though I suggest you gain a couple of lvls even for these.

avoid getting too deep into the ashland and generally too deep into wilderness. avoid big bodies of deep water(fishies are nasty to fight at low lvls)

*might contain spoilers*(mentions names of monsters)

that is I highly suggest you keep to fighting Rats, scribs, kwarma larvae, mudcrabs, and the small fish(be careful though since big ones are usually nearby) for the first couple of levels.

if you don't want mild spoilers don't read on and simply when you see something that isn't in above list..***N.:D

if you feel like gambling(50% survival) you could try and take on Kwarma workers, Cliffracers, guars, diseased guars, big fish, Eiljiit(sorry can't rememebr their name...the bipeds one without horns) Netch female/male. possible humanoid without any armor or high lvl gear.

things that you definitly want to avoid: humanoids with armor and med-high gear(if you can see them wearing any armor generally it's a good idea to avoid fighting them at low lvl) Kwarma warriors, Kwarma queens, Ogres, Clanfear, vampires, Kuajit(again sorry can't rememebr the name, but it's the biped with big horns) skeletons, wraiths, zombies, Dreugh, elementals, scamps, twillights, croc humans(can't remember name), DEADRE(!) and there's probably a couple more I've forgotten.

*added stuff*

Fun game, but it's sorta ruined for me because, like SubKamran, I know where everything is. I must have played that game every day from when it was released, to Christmas day 04 when I got Half Life 2. I can honestly say that I have, literally, walked over the entire map. For ****s sake, I once stumbled upon a little shipwreck out in the northern corner of the map, found an order form for like 50 pillows, instantly knew which NPC it was intended for, brought it back and got the strangest unique item in the game...the "Extra Comfy Pillow". I shit you not.

So...some advice for someone just starting.
1) Like everyone's saying, join guilds and follow their quests. You're a level 1 warrior, so the Fighter's Guild should be a good place to start. The first few quests given to you from the Guild in Balmora (the city Cosades is in) should be relatively easy for you to handle. One other thing, join the Mages guild in Balmora, do the first quest (finding flowers located in the town you start in), maybe another quest after that, it's easy and you don't need magic, the the next quest lets you steal the gems the person on the second floor of the guild owns. The owner walks away (only time in the game the npc moves) leaving you a good 3 minutes to swipe everything.

2) Go to Caldera whever you have armor, weapons or potions you want to sell. There's a house called something like "Gorack Manor". Inside is a little demon/goblin thing. That's the "Creeper". He has $5000 and buys all items that are in 100% condition for full price.

3) If you want lots of money early on, read this. If you don't want to kinda ruin the "fun" of killing rats and fish for the first 20 hours of the game, avert your eyes now. In Vivec (the main city) there's lotsa different sections. Go to the top of the Redoran section. Look for the "Dralor Manor". Go inside to the top floor. There should be a room at the top of a staircase with 1 npc inside. There's also a dresser. Open the dresser and there's a key called the "Dralor treasury key". Take the key, you'll have to kill the npc, (they're unarmed so even for you, it shouldn't be a problem) go back outside and make your way to the building called something like "Redoran Treasury". Go in, go downstairs and find the vault called the "Dralor Vault". Open the door, since you have the key nobody stops you. Leave the door open and "rest" untill all the guards inside wander out. Close the door, steal the loot, walk out and make your way back to Caldera. Sell your possessions to the Creeper and train with the new money. You're at level 20 before you know it.
