displacement surfaces and lighting

Displacement surfaces seem like a really cool way to make terrain and such but I always seem to run into problems with shadows or lighting. For example, if there is a shadow from a model and it's right on the edge of where a displacement surface meets a regular surface the shadow won't be one the displacement. Also, I've got a room in my map with displacement surfaces.. whenever I fire a weapon in there the whole room that's made out of displacements lights up real bright and it takes a sec for the light to go away... grrr. Anyone else experiance quirky things when working with displacement surfaces? If so, what do you have an suggestions/tips?
