Hi all!

Sorry if this is the wrong place but I just wanted to see what you think of my DM map. Go easy. Its not awesome or anything I dont think.

The skybox you see (apart from the outside area) will be deleted, its only there so I dont get leaks. Also, the last shot had to be took in fullbright because I haven't placed lights out there yet. One more thing. The button you see in the first shot, makes the power box (which is covered up by the spark in shot 2) spark and ignite the explosive barrel. Ok I lied, 1 more thing. There obviously will be ceilings and crap (apart from outside.)

You might want to have a kind of frame for the metal floor, or make it all concrete.

http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/3...yet00024am.jpg
Catwalk looks really thin :O

http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/5...yet00036sw.jpg
You should add more faces to the columns

Don't have such bright lights

http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/9...yet00050te.jpg
Again, light is too bright

Use displacements to help make the ground looks better

Overall nice brushwork and ideas, except those few details that were pointed out.

Thanks for the advice. Its really much in W.I.P all that is to come.

Also when you send in your next set of screenshots can you take them at better angles and put the links in an order that guides you around the map so you get a feel for the layout.

Either:

- untick the lighting boxes when you compile it, and do the same thing
or
- go into Hammer and pull the centre of the four-views across to fill the viewable area with the 3D view and fly the camara up to get a good idea of the layout. You can also select all of the "ceiling" brushes with ctrl+click and then hit delete so that we can see the contents of the rooms. The PrtSc (Print Screen) button will capture the image on the monitor and you can paste this into paint and then convert to Jpeg. Ctrl+z will give you back your ceiling brushes again.

Do you have a planned layout at all? Have you decided how big your map is going to be and which weapons you're going to include. You should make sure that the areas around the weapon spawns aren't unduly biased. For instance the rocket launcher shouldn't spawn in a small area or near tight corridors because it won't require enough skill to use it, and a situation like this might lead to someone just camping the rocket launcher spawn. It needs to be in a largish area with a bit of cover for people to use to make their way towards whoever's just picked it up. You could also add some props near these static cover areas so that when the rockets hit the props go flying in ultra-dramatic fashion.

Ive been updating it, theres a few new features. Ive added a blown out wall, which lets you on top of a "horizontal cooling tank" which is in the grass area, that has the crossbow on it. There are fences in the area so you cant get in by going through the garage door. If you fall down though there is a small fence and you can use gravity gun to moe it out of the way. Ive put brackets on the walk way and made the walk way thicker. Ive placed all the weapons im going to place. (Which is all the weapons) Apart from RPG. I've still got to place that, not found a place yet. Can I be assisted, I want to have my explosive barrels in the map to respawn. How do I do that?

Thanks, Screens of the update soon.

Personally, I think you should hold off on screenshots until you're atleast 90% done with layout and brush work before you start adding lighting and showing off what you got. Seems like you have a good idea on where you're going with this.

It is fullbright mate. Because I havent planted lights yet.

What do the rest of you guys think? (Sorry for double post:borg: )

I really can't say much until you get it in a more 'complete' state. Try to focus just on the architecture for the time being, and then you can go over with the lighting process when you've got your brushes down. The 'arch' tool is your friend.

Ok, cool. I'll get straight on that after i've posted theses screens:

http://img431.imageshack.us/img431/1581/dmdontknowyet00266xg.jpg
Graffiti, Garage light, Junk and other stuff added. Look to the right, hmm, I wonder where the RPG is. oh look, a wall with a few holes in it.:stare:

http://img431.imageshack.us/img431/1728/dmdontknowyet00275qu.jpg Added a spot light for the atmosphere.

http://img431.imageshack.us/img431/5748/dmdontknowyet00289at.jpg A light added at the blown out wall. Its got a subtle flicker.

Need to work on lighting. There are better ways to use the light entities than to just drop a light ent in your map.
But you don't need to work on that now.

As limpet said, forget about lighting for the moment. Hell, forget about texturing too! Just work on your layout.

I've seen a similar one in a desert-themed custom CS:S map, it's a nice cut-out shape to use. The thing is by including that snip at the bottom of the arch as well you're effectively nullifying the cover it might give. That's not to say don't use it, but think about providing useful and effective cover (that's not just crates -people get bored of crates).

(S.F.D.P)

Here are some updated screenshots, the maps lighting is starting to make it look like a scary theme. Not sure yet though. Here they are;
