Hey there I have never played half life 2, I dont have much time for gaming due to school and my other hobbies.. I used to be a big gaming/computer freak when I was younger. I am wondering if half life 2 comes in other languages, and in that case which?

Thanks a lot, and dont be hardcore on me

Kristian

Yes; it's available in French, Italian, German, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Korean (Teen), Korean (Adult), Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Russian, and Thai.

see all u people that flame on these forums, u got people afraid to post decent questions, see what u have done!!!!!

The reason is that I am learning italian, and it could be fun to play this game and learn language at the same time.. So a few more questions:

- How much dialogue do you think there is compared to action/shooting parts, or just all in all?

- is there any written dialogue/text in the game?

Regards,
Kristian

There's a fair amount of dialouge in the game, of course not comparable to the shooting stuff but there is alot of dialouge. I don't know if they translate soldiers cries and stuff, I only play in english, but I'm fairly sure the subtitles are in whatever language you choose in Steam.

The soldiers' cries were translated in HL1, so I'd expect them to be in HL2. And as AJ Rimmer implied, all the dialogue (and the cries, usually) can be displayed as subtitles. Can't mix audio/subtitle language without playing around with the cache files and overrides, though. :|

"Can't mix audio/subtitle language without playing around with the cache files and overrides, though" - what does this mean, precisely

Are the conversations not translated in the audio?

No, conversations are translated in the audio. I mean you can't have listen to the audio in, say, Italian, while having the subtitles be in English. They have to be the same language, without monkeying around with the game files.

You know, Half-Life 2 is good enough to play through several times. If you want to enjoy the game to its maximum and learn a language, I recommend you play in your native language for the first time, and the one you want to learn the second time.

1) Much of the excellence of the game comes from the dialogue. Your first time through it, it's better to understand all of it completely.
2) The second time you'll have some memory of what some of the dialogue was, so understanding it in the other language will actually be easier.

Solver, you are quite right... Ok heres another noobish question, will I then have to buy the game two times, one for each language?
But I do think I will enjoy the game more in english, I know they did a lot out of that part.

you can change the language in the options of the game, you only need to buy the game once

No need to buy the game twice. As you probably know, it comes with Steam, the software through which you run and play HL2. Steam has a language option. When you select anything other than English, Steam will download the files for that language, and when it's ready, HL2 will play with that language.

Also, another good reason to play in English first is the amazing voice acting on some characters.

Not saying that the foreign actors are bad, but yes, the voice acting is really great and at some times, completely amazing *cough*Breen*chough*

I can not judge the foreign language actors as I have only played the English HL2, but Dr. Breen in the English version is simply something you HAVE to hear.
