D'oh! Stuck in Follow Freeman (or something)

That bit where you need to get inside the building (the nexus overwatch I think Barney called it). What the hell do you do? All I can do is run around outside the gates like an idiot until the big ass laser kills me. Any suggestions? I'm guessing it's just something stupid that I've missed

I got stuck in the same place... on the right of the building there is a blockade with a cord behind it that you can unplug with the gravity gun.

I dunno how far in to the courtyard are you are...but if you're stuck outside like I was for a bit...behind the tipped over blue container there's a path...you have to zig-zag over the plaza going thru a couple of buildings(far left/right side) when you get to the end shot down the the barrier with the grav-gun...

When you enter this area, go all the way to the right, around the rubble. Go through the building there, which will take you past the first set of forcefields. Sprint across the couryard to the next building, which will take past the second set. From here, the suppresor won't try to get you, but you'll have to take care of some combine. Go to the right of the building, and you can pull the plug out of the wall to turn the forcefield off.
