Finished HL2?:A quick question(with spoilers)

I finished the game the other day, but was expecting at least one of the major characters to die from the second half onwards. why? I'm sure at least one of the game reviews mentioned that the source engine / facial animation made the loss of colleagues heartbreaking. Perhaps I misconstrued the quote, but I was expecting Alyx, Eli or Barney to kick the bucket. Did any of you guys get this impression?

Perhaps they were simply talking about the resistance you fight with near the end. A lot of them died.

Or maybe the look on resistance fighters faces when you ran errr accidentally crashed into them with the buggy :naughty:
