Ok, I know this is a common problem but yet I don't know what to do other then disabling my firewall, virus scan/protection ect...and I know that isn't to safe but it's the only way I can play online and I have to disable it for all of my games, Day of Defeat: Source, CS:S, Half-life deathmatch, Battlefield 2(even though its not a source game) so If you can let me know how to fix this please do. Oh ya I use McAfee for my Virus protection and Anti Spamware but I use Zone Alarm for a firewall if that helps..yes it's a weird combo but its how I get through:P

Right-click McAfee security center on the Taskbar, where Windows clock is, on lower right-hand corner of your screen, look for "Personal Firewall" to "Internet applications" and click it, when internet applications windows opens, look for any and all of the programs you trying to access internet with, and give full permission or Outside access only rights by right-clicking the program and choosing it accordingly. Remember, some games don't really need full access, I don't know if HL games are one of them, some games (MP games) only need an outside access only. Please refer to the HL2/Steam help section of the game.

Good Luck.

Umm, Barney- He said ZoneAlarm is his firewall. Your suggestion most likely won't solve a firewall issue as I doubt he will find any ZoneAlarm settings in the McAfee security center at all. (Although, I haven't used McAfee before).

-616- ... You turn of your firewall etc? Seriously? Do you know how easy it is for your PC to get computer AIDS, etc? Damn...

Go to ZoneAlarm. Dont have Steam or anything you are trying to make work, running. Click Program control. Click the Programs tab (top right). Go down and find any Steam, HL2, CS:S etc exe's you can, and left click on the permissions, and set all of them to the green tick. This is assuming of course you installed ZA correctly in the first place, and ticked all the "configure for internet access" buttons etc when you were installing. Did you?????? Be honest.....

If that doesn't work, try disableing McAfee- I have heard of issues between it and ZA. Go for AVG free.

If none of this works, either (don't take this the wrong way)

1) you are too stupid to own a PC, and what you are doing to it should be a crime.
2) your PC is so funked up with stuff from all the stuff getting into your PC, going "hey- there's no bouncers on tonight!" and calling up all their horrible little home-boy, rapper wannabe (although all rappers are wannabes), crack-dealing buddies that want to take advantage of your suddenly alone HD, probe ports that should not be probed, and trash the place, tell your HD they will call, never do, and leave it abused, with new life-forms growing inside, no income, no idea what to do or where it is, and looking like a junkie. Basically no good to anyone. Unless you are pro-choice and decide to re-format.

Oh! thanks Shasta wasn't paying attention there. Wasn't a nightmare waiting to happen, using two different security softwares side by side?

Anyway do what Shasta told ya and hopefully you will be OK.

Good Luck.

No problem Barney! Now about that beer you owe me....

Yep, glad to help. Especially since you were open to advice, and could follow instructions. That makes for a great "helpee"!
