y'know, I was thinking about the job he offers gordon, and what happens if gordon declines. If the gman is indeed working to protect humanity (big "if"), and needs gordon to avoid an alien take over, then if Gordon declines, aliens will kill the humans, including Gordon, so maybe the gman isn't threatening gordon, but simply showing him what will happen?

I know there's alot of "if"s in there.

This all leads me to reveal the truth...
