Hey boys and girls, Im formatting my pc soon and I'd love to keep my HL2 saved games and open chapters, so where are the files located?

Cause I really don't want to play the entire game from one end to the other again, I'd just like it to be complete.

Thanks.

oh and if you know where the saved files for Dark Messiah SP aswell post here too.

Cheers.

C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/username/Half-life 2/hl2/SAVE

That directory contains your save files for Half-life 2. This can be copy and pasted again into the new directory when you reinstall. (Note you will need to run HL2 once first after installation to create these directories, only load to title screen for example).

Also, there is a cheat to unlock all the chapters if you wish to do so.

C:/Steam/Steamapps/username/Half-life 2/hl2/cfg, and open the config file in notepad.

Search for the entry sv_unlockedchapters "XX", and change the X's to 14 (this will unlock all chapters). Then save it.

With regard to Dark Messiah, I'm not certain. It's either in two locations. C:/Steam/Steamapps/username/common/DarkMessiah (look around in there for a save folder), or in "My Documents" look for a 'Dark Messiah' folder there also.

Yes exactly, except the folders are a little different, e.g. they end /Halflife2Episode1/Ep1/SAVE and Episode 2 alike.

The unlocking chapters cheat isn't exactly the same, for episode 2 there are 7 chapters so you change the value to '7', I can't remember how many chapters Episode 1 has though. Google it or someone else may remind you as I can't check right now! (Must dash).

Just backup the whole steamapps folder :P :afro:

TBH if you've got the space I'd recommend that, especially if you bought most of your games over Steam. Copy it to your backup location, format, install steam, copy it back.
