Free iPod? Legit or not?

Hey guys,

I saw this news item at gizmodo:

Pretty much there's a site up giving away free iPods. The main idea behind the free ipod is get 5 ppl plus u to sign up, and join some promo (aol, ancestery.com, etc) and once u get 5 ppl, they send u an ipod. The good thing is that u can just cancel those promo and pay nothing! Sounds like a scam? It seemed like one to me too... When I first saw it on a forum, I , ignored it, but after doing some googling:

I saw almost the exact same scheme on another website that was "giving away" laptops. It's always some sort of scam/pyramid scheme, even if it is legal. Some of them even sound very convincing and you really need to study just EXACTLY what they're saying to find out where the catch is. This laptop deal I mentioned sounded great to me for quite some time. But it just seemed to good to be true. So I researched their site a bit, and asked some very pointed questions in an e-mail and found out that indeed some people were getting free laptops, but there was some sort of catch that made it so your name went on the bottom of a huge list and it was set up so you might be able to get one in about ten years or so. (It was a while ago, so I can't remember the exact scheme.)

Just remember, somewhere, somehow, they're making money off this and not doing it out of the goodness of thier hearts.

Edit: Heh, what do you know? Their "Terms and Conditions" link doesn't seem to work. Hmmm....

I know how u guys feel. I thought this is a scam too. Althugh it may still be one, I don't think it's illegal. One of the guys on some other forum was saying how this can't be counted as a pymarid scheme because it DOESN'T involve giving money to the compnay involved.

I reg'd last night w/ one of the promos and just canceled just now. I gotta tell you i was worried as hell last night fearing it wont' cancel or something. But the girl at ancestery.com (one of the various promo you can signup for) threw me some pitch but let me cancel. So basically it's risk free... except for the stress/worry i had -_-;;;;

There's actually some legal internet scams as well. They're legitimate offers, it's just that they alwasy have some catch which allows the company to gain something while giving away maybe a few items here and there. Take this specific offer for instance. I'm sure there are actually some people who have gotten a free ipod. They can suck more people in that way by offering eye-witness accounts of their own legitimacy. However, I'd say that once it gets going you have about a snowball's chance in hell of actually getting a free ipod.

Not that I'm saying that this one is necessarily legal though. It might be, but I wouldn't enter any information until I could read their terms and conditions, which happen to be convienently broken.

There seems to be some confusion about how this site (and others) works. Let me explain. You sign up. You have to get 5 referrals. Those 5 people each have to get 5 referrals (or people to sign up) and so on.

In terms of numbers it goes like this -
1 needs 5, 5 needs 25, 25 needs 125, 125 - 625, 625-3125, 3125, 15,625, 78125, 390625, 1953125, 9765625, 48828125, 244140625, 1220703125, 6103515625, 30517578125- that's when we run out! 16 levels.

Its a pyramid.
Plain and simple.
And as such it is not permitted in the iPodlounge Forums. You need to realise that you have to be one of the top 12% to actually ever stand a chance of getting anything from these schemes.
They are a con, and by signing up to them you are just perpetuating the scam and lining someone elses pocket. It is also spam. You post this info here, email your friends and family and so you are spamming for the spammer.
It is viral marketing*.
Most viral marketing plans use others resources to get the word out. Members who post messages and links to sites which feature the promise of free iPods are relaying the marketers message for them and they are using the resources of iPodlounge to do this rather than their own.

As such we will have nothing to do with them on iPodlounge and members who post messages on these "offers" may find themselves being banned from this site.

Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it is...

I just quoted it from the admin of ipodlounge. Maybe it's not a classical pyramid scheme, but it still has some of the characteristics. Seriously, I can't believe anyone thinks it's really legitimate, or that they'll actually get an ipod at this late into it.
 
So you could get a free ipod
however you could be spammed for the rest of your life by advertisers.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. What scam?! When I'm not here posting with my free* computer (27Ghz, 512MB FUTAR video card, 2 Terabit HDD), I'm at home enjoying my free* Xbox on top of my free* PS2 on my free* Plasma TV with my free* Dolby surround sound which I also plug my free* iPod AND free* iPod mini into. ALl this in my free* mansion on free* property in a free* country! Hmmm, wrong kind of free, but WHO CARES!! ITS ALL FREE*!!!

I know someone on some forums I used to go to, and for ages he had the Free iPod link in his sig, and then after months, he had a screenshot of some order form showing that the iPod had been delivered, and I think he actually has it now. And it was from that site. I would probably do it, but i saw that it says you must live in the US.

How many referrals is it until you get the iPod, and what is the total number of referrals someone has to get for a free iPod?
 
Like someone said, you need to get in early to actually get anything. It's still a scam thoguh, and I think this thread should be closed before anyone else gets sucked in. We have already seen how vunerable some of the forum members are around here (Jen etc.....)

it does work! a good friend of mine just got his ipod...just takes alittle while to get it when u complete the referal thing
