He works for someone else.
He watches and appraises Gordens actions.
Could the G-Man just be a "talent scout" for some universal orginisation. He recomends Gorden to them and reports to them how Gorden handles situations.
Could this still unknown orginisation be looking for a "Hero". Someone to conquer the battling forces of the univere(s) such as the Xen and the Combine?
Gorden was tested at Black Mesa, and he passed, and was then sent into the heart of the Combine controled City 17 and destroyed the link between it and the Combine. He proved himself worthy of further employment yet again. Could his battles against other dimensional beings culminate in him saving the universe as we know it?

What do others think, continue this line of thought or trash it?

PS. Sorry for saying could so much..

I don't think he does work for anyone else any more - at no point in HL2 does he mention his "employers"; he has received some interesting offers for your... services. Not "We have received..."; not "My employers have received..."
Essentially, he's got Gordon as some bargaining chip/resource-for-hire, so he no longer needs employers and he can do as he likes.

Or those employers could be gone by HL2. Or they could still exist but the G-Man prefers not to mention them.

I maintain that he did, at all times, have his own agenda, even when he had his employers - I don't know if he still has them, but I'm completely sure that the G-Man has an agenda of his own, whether he is a member of an anti-Combine alliance, a Vortigaunt manifestation or something else.

My thoughts: The G-Mans employers were the Combine.

Basicly from what Angry Lawyer posted in the thread CombineVSXen the Combine and Xenians already knew each other, and ran from the Combine. So, It's possible that the Combine couldn't get to where the Xenians fled to, which was Xen, possibly because Nihilanth was keeping the way concealed. So the Combine can't get into Xen to enslave yet another race and uses one of their employees to influence Earth to start a Resonance Cascade and have someone kill Nihilanth so that not only would Xen be free for invasion, but the Combine would have another planet to take over in one swipe. So then they send G-Man to Earth, get an army and train Shephard, blah blah blah....Then Gordon kills Nihilanth, the Combines path is clear. So then later on the G-Man decides that A: He doesn't like the Combines motives B: He wants to be the boss or C: This theory is wrong and he does actually have employers but just doesn't mention them in Half Life 2. Of course, you could possibly argue that if the Combine could do what the G-Man can, they would have public transportation, they would be able to stop/freeze time, blah blah blah...But it's POSSIBLE that G-Man's abilities are his own and not some technology. For example Nihilanth could do almost everything G-Man can(Teleport, spawn portals, etc.)

It is unlikely G-Man works for the Combine, he has helped you (or at least guided) destroy the Citadel and cause upraor in a major Combine city. Perhaps his employers are not mentioned because now Gordon has shown his worth G-Man no longer needs permission to use Gordon in whatever way he pleases

if you've ever done contract work (as the G-Man appears to do), then your 'employer' at any particular moment in time is the person currently paying for your services.

so, during the events of HL1, the G-Man could very well have an 'employer' and then, following the events of HL1, that contract is fulfilled and the G-Man is once again 'employer-less'.

So, during the events of HL2, the G-Man could theoretically be without a current employer. Thus, since the G-Man notes that he has received some interesting offers for Gordon's services, should G-Man and Gordon agree to one of the contracts (or the G-Man agrees on Gordon's behalf), then the G-Man would once again have an 'employer'

I know all of that is pretty convoluted, but I hope that my intent makes sense.

i still personally believe that Gman represent some kind of intergalactic or multi-species mercenary type group, and the gman is one of there many scouts seeking out the best of various races soldiers, then reports back and holds the subject in "captitvity" until it is time to use them.... possibly might explain why gman had involvement in HL1's "incident" as his group wud thrive on war and conflict

why thank you UltimaApocalyspe..... of all the theories ive heard i think its the one that above all makes the most actual sense! and if ur one of the people that believes what the gman says is true then this is the logical conclusion..... other theories that its gordon from the future and all that just dont have enough fact or basis. the only thing that cant be explained is why GF never talks..... unless the simple reason is to simply "imerse" the gamer more in the universe
