Game crashes to desktop while loading(after Valve appeared)

Hi all, my half life 2 crashes to my desktop while loading and it's getting increashingly frustrating for me, i've done everything from updating my drivers and graphic settings, please help.

do you still see HL2 as a minimized application on your taskbar?

this happens to me, and i just click on the taskbar 'button' a few times until the game finally stabilizes and i can play. frustrating? yes. but i've adapted to it.

No i don't have the minimized application, does this mean my graphic card's at fault?

make sure there aren't any extraneous, memory-sucking apps running in the background (anti-virus, spyware, etc).

i read somewhere that it might be caused by accidentally hitting the windows button. i know i've never done this, but when i try to do some directx testing via directx diagnostics the individual tests are cancelled because i supposedly hit a key. don't think that can help you, but i just thought it was strange, so i share it with you.
