Getting into the console mode?

I want to skip through the game, since my save game files were deleted...

I know that you need to be in console mode, but I'm not sure how. I've tried the ~ key, but I have to press shift and # to get that, doesn't seem to work...

Any other way? I'm running the downloaded version from Steam.

OPTIONS > KEYBOARD > ADVANCED > and click the box that enables the console.

Or right click on HL2 in your steam games and go to properties, and type -console in the launch options.
