Can't believe I didn't pick this up before. The film Brazil takes place in a society George Orwell saw in 1984. The soldiers wore gasmasks and were there to supress the people. Its a comedy/sci-fi/fantasy and you all should see it as well. Anyone else notice this? Anyone else actually seen Brazil?

Yes. I'd go into further detail of the references but I've forgotten them :(.

I saw it a while ago, so I don't remember it too well. There's a link there, though it's hard to tell if it's intended

Something I never caught until today was that Lamarr (Kleiner's pet headcrab) is a reference to the old actress Hedi (pronounced head-y) Lamarr. Apparently Kleiner is a fan. :D

It might be a reference and might be not. HL2 is definitely influenced by 1984 significantly, but then again, many things are. 1984 is a truly great work, being a source f inspiration for many things. I thought "1984" immediately when I saw the first screenshots of Combine opressing civilians.

I'll just say what many other people have said... when you've got a totarilian society, then some things are just... genre specific.

Not the gasmasks though.

Has anyone seen the movie "Oldboy"? Well in that movie in one scene you can hear people playing counter-strike in the background. It's not a direct reference and it's converse, but hey!
