I'm bored so I decided to have a go at writng down how i would like HL3 to open. Here goes...

Half Life 3

You (Gordon Freeman) are in the dark room/place where Gman leaves you at the end of Half Life 2. What seem to be stars stream past all around you or perhaps it is you who is moving. You can look around but cannot move yet.

A white rectangle appears out of nowhere to your left about 10 feet in front of you. Gman walks in, still in his suit and still carrying his infamous briefcase.

He approaches you and begins to talk

‘Mr Freeman… I must apologise for leaving you for such a long time. I hope your second stay here hasn’t been too… un-comfort-able. Your destruction of the Combine citadel on earth had… unexpected results and I have been rather busy of late, attending to… other matters.

You have proved yourself to be an invaluable asset and I hope you will continue to do so. I’m sure you have a lot of… questions to ask but…’

Gman glances at watch on wrist and smiles.

‘Time waits for no man Mr Freeman. And I have such sights to show you.’

*teleportation noises*

There is a bright flash of white light.

You are standing in a graveyard on what appears to be earth. It is raining.
Thunder crackles in the distance. All around you there are ruined and half destroyed buildings. In the distance the remnants of the Combine Citadel you destroyed still stand but it barely reaches 50ft. The sky is dark and brooding.

You are standing in front of a large memorial in the graveyard. Gman points to the memorial. As you read through it you see the names

Eli Vance
Dr Kleiner
Alyx Vance

Gman beings to speak

‘Look around you Mr Freeman. I must commend on your work; you did an excellent job…’

Gman smiles at you

‘We all have to make sacrifices Mr Freeman… I assumed you’d want to know which ones you made.’

There is another flash of white light accompanied by teleportation noises.

You are standing next to Gman on a small hill overlooking a huge purple lake. The sky is a very pale blue and thin red clouds are strewn across it. The ground is covered with sand and small clusters of red flowers are growing on amongst the sand. In the distance there is large mountain range coated in snow.

A Strider is standing on the lakeshore seemingly watching over about twenty naked, thin, pale blue humanoid like creatures with grey collars around their necks and wrists. They appear to be harvesting a green plant growing in the shallows of the lake. They pull the plant up from the water and trek wearily up the beach to a Combine Dropship. The Dropship is carrying a large basket similar to the ones used for carrying troops. They place the clumps of the plant in the basket and then walk back to the beach.

The creatures are obviously in pain and very tired. One of them falls over on his way up to the Dropship dropping his clump of the plant. Two of the creatures rush over to help him. The Strider immediately spears one of them with its foot and shoots the other two dead.

The rest of the creatures look on in a mix of shock, horror and sadness. The Strider makes one of those strange noises signalling for the creatures to get back to work. Suddenly a huge swarm of these pale, blue humanoids swarm out of the lake. These ones don’t have the collars on their necks and wrists. They are also a much darker blue and more muscular. They are armed with strange guns that fire blue energy bolts and several have long ropes. The humanoids fire at the Strider and at first it seems to do no damage. The Strider fires an energy blast at them killing lots of the humanoids.
However, one of the humanoids manages to lasso the Striders leg. Now the slaves are joining in the fight and they pull the Strider over into the water, swarm on top of it and rip it to pieces.

The creatures began to cheer and run towards to the Dropship. It takes off and begins to fly away above the lake. However, once it is about halfway across the lake a huge beam of blue energy fires up from beneath surface totally vaporising the Dropship. The creatures began to cheer and hug each other.

Another flash of brightlight and teleportation noises.

You and Gman are now standing in front of a huge Combine building, similar to the Citadel but much, much wider. The sky is grey and covered in cloud. The ground is muddy. There isn’t anything organic in site. All around the building are the remnants of a futuristic city.

A huge door leads into the Citadel. It is guarded by Striders and Crab Synths. Gunships fly overhead into large entrances set high up in the building.

There are some strange creatures repairing a small hole in the wall of the building. They have hollow sunken faces and short poles instead of feet like the Stalkers and a row of three holes in the left side of their ribcage. Upon closer inspection you see they bear an uncanny resemblance to the Shock Troopers of Race X…

pretty nice... i would like you to write some more what happens after that.. what gman says and so on... good work!

Thats sounds like it could be interesting. Here's my hopeful possibility on the openning scene for a Half-Life Exp Pack...

You are standing at the top of the Combine Citadel and the Dark Energy reactor has just exploded, but frozen. The G-Man "materializes" out of the explosion...

"Time, Mrs. Vance?"

And you look to your left, and Gordon Freeman is frozen in time.

"While no one has ever proven themselves quite like Mr. Freemen has, I must admit, Mrs. Vance that you have shown limitless potential. That's why I'm here, Mrs. Vance. My employers have requested your services, and well, rather than asking you to cooperate, I will assume that you would prefer any circumstances to those which you currently face. [looks towards frozen explosion... G-Man and you teleport to a soucefully remastered moving 'Xen-elevator' from the end of HL1] You have proven yourself to be extremely versatile and we feel that there are places where your talents would be better suited... at least in the interests of our mutual goals."

He now telports you to a black screen which comes into focus. The G-Man 'outfocuses,' and you soon realize that you are in a very alien environment. It is obviously Xen, but also soucefully remastered. Many Vortigaunts are working on various Xen devices and one of them comes up to you and starts talking. You are free to move about the Xen 'lab.' On one side of the room there is an abvious teleporter, though not functioning.

"You are the Alyx Vance. We have been shown of your coming. We have gathered some supplies which the Alyx Vance would find useful. Utilize them quickly quickly, now, for the falling of the greater enemy must not be delayed."

The Vort goes over and talks to other Vorts in Vort-speech. They start charging up an organic device and the teleporter starts flowing. If you do not take the armor, weapons, etc. that the Vorts laid out, the Vorts says something like "Quickly must the Alyx Vance prepare. The journey ahead will not be light."

Finally, the teleport is ready and the Vort says something to the effect of "Quickly you must enter the portal. Your reasons will be clear in time."

You go through the portal and suddenly you are in an alleyway. The buildings on either side are metal and the street outside is lit up. Upon closer inspection, you are not in an alleyway at all, but a humongous dead end corridor in a massive building, with a ceiling higher than the sky. Through the cracks in the alleyway above, you see various 'rails' moving about large metal objects. As you look out of the alleyway ahead of you, you see various aliens, all cybernetically enhanced, some of which look like humansize bipedal Synth. It is clear that you are on the Combine homeworld.

Not bad -- although are you implying race x may return, because they wont be ;)

I have one, actually, but not now.

:p

and PAI MEI i'm liking your exp theory  especially gmans speech (altho we all know alyx is gonna die :p ) ;)

Half Life 3

(revised and expanded version :D ) enjoy...

You awake in the dark place where Gman left you at the end of Half Life 2. What look like stars speed past on either side of you. Or perhaps it is you who are moving. You can look around but cannot move yet.

A white rectangle appears to your left about 10 feet in front of you. Gman walks in still dressed in his suit and carrying his infamous briefcase.

Gman glances at watch on wrist and smiles.

‘Time waits for no man Mr Freeman. And I have such sights to show you.’

There is a bright flash of white light.

You appear, next to Gman, in what appears to be a makeshift graveyard. All around you are crude wooden crosses and small tombstones with short messages roughly chiselled into them. It is raining lightly and very misty. The sky is dark and cloudy.
Thunder crackles in the distance. All around the graveyard you can make out what look like derelict/destroyed buildings and in the distance the ruined remains of the Combine Citadel. Jutting up like a jagged spear the Citadel is mere 100ft now, but it still looms menacingly in the distance.

Gman points to the grave directly in front of you. As you read them you see the names

Eli Vance
Alyx Vance

And the words

Best friends in life, may they remain as close in death

Gman beings to speak

‘Look around you Mr Freeman. I must commend on your work; you did an excellent job…’

Gman smiles at you

‘We all have to make sacrifices Mr Freeman… I assumed you’d want to know which ones you made.’

Gman turns to look at you and there is another flash of white light.

You are now standing next to Gman on a small hill overlooking a huge purple lake. The sky is a very pale blue and thin red clouds are strewn across it. The ground is covered with sand and small clusters of red flowers are growing on amongst the sand. In the distance there is large mountain range coated in snow.

However, once it is about halfway across the lake a huge beam of blue energy fires up from beneath surface totally vaporising the Dropship. The creatures began to cheer and hug each other.

There is another flash of white light.

You and Gman are standing in a large valley. There is lush green grass growing everywhere and the sides of the valley are covered with flowers and trees. Up ahead there is a fight going on. 5 large grey ape, gorilla like creatures and fighting with 2 Synth versions of themselves. The Synths are coated in metal, and have large blades where there hands should be. The apes are using clubs and rocks to fight with and they smash the Synths to pieces. A Gunship suddenly flies in, very low and just about as it is about to attack an ape leaps from a tall tree, grabs the Gunships gun/nose and rips it off. The ape crashes to the ground triumphantly as the Gunship screams in pain and flies off. The apes cheer and screech and run off into the forest.

Gman then speaks to you again

‘The Combine had become somewhat... complacent. The destruction of the Citadel on Earth spread rapidly through both the Combine Empire and the races they have been enslaving. You gave hope to many Mr Freeman. I hope you are... proud of yourself.’

Another flash of light.

They have hollow sunken faces; four arms all cut off half way down the forearm and replaced with various machine appendages and short poles instead of feet like the Stalkers and a row of three holes in the left side of their ribcage.

Another flash of white light.

You are now standing in whiteness. Everything around you is white. There is nothing else to be seen. Gman stands next to you.

He turns to look at you and smiles knowingly

‘Mr Freeman you have been somewhat silent throughtout all that has happened since our meeting… I suspect your mind is simply overflowing with questions but you just… don’t know where to start?

Perhaps I have been over zealous in my attempts to keep you a silent partner in this… partnership of ours, but even I have overheads Mr Freeman. However I have been granted permission to fill you in so to speak…’

I loved the beginning of yours, it dies after the grave sighting. Not really Half-Lifeish. I think it would be better if it were like this...

The sky is dark and brooding.

In front of you there is a large stone statue memorial of Gordan Freeman, crowbar in hand, standing in what appears to be the demolished citadel. He rises above it with the Hev Suit on. There are some flowers around it and chalk writing on the base thanking him for freeing City 17.

'Mr Freeman you have been somewhat silent throughtout all that has happened since our meeting… I suspect your mind is simply overflowing with questions but you just… don’t know where to start?'

You gave me a great idea!!! assuming that its not what you originally meant.

Good job with the G-Man dialogue and images, BTW, I personally think it all fits in a lot better than your original.

HL3 is going to be just as much of a jump in technology as the other two, were, right?

So imagine this... you're wearing your signature HL3 headset while playing HL3...

And as narc said, the G-Man says...

"Perhaps I have been over zealous in my attempts to keep you a silent partner in this… partnership of ours, but even I have overheads Mr Freeman. However I have been granted permission to fill you in so to speak…

... so please," he continues, "Ask what you will."

And you say into yourheadset what you will.

"Did the Combine control Xen?"
"Mister Freeman, the Combine are the the least of your worries right now. But, no, the combine have never set foot in Xen."

"Who the **** are you?"
"Don't get angry Mister Freeman. My employers would call me, a 'field agent.' I try and find useful subjects to aid our cause."

"And what the shit is that cause, tardbag?"
"Mister Freeman, lets try and keep this on a civilized level. I cannot deisclose to you the full extent of our goals, but the goals..."
"Why the **** not?!"
"Please, Mister Freeman, do not interrupt. As I was saying, the goals which you would be concerned with involve keeping of balance of power. Power vacuums are very dangerous, Mister Freeman, and can have far reaching consequences..."

And if you try and mess it up...

"So where does Gargantuan fit into all of this?"
"Mister Freeman, it is safe to say that that does not concern either me or you."

"Why do you enjoy eating tofu hot dogs?"
"Mister Freeman, it is safe to say that that does not concern either me or you."

"**** you!!!"
"Mister Freeman, lets try and keep this on a civilized level."

"?Habla espanol?...
"En Taro Adun? "
"Krabba munz chorbity?"
"Mister Freeman, please rephrase or restate your question. I'm afraid I did not understand you completely."

You have to admit that the technology to pull that off would at least be possible in 3-5 years...

yeah, they have similar things where u type in the questions. virtual barmaid etc but talking to gman now that would be really, really cool, lol.

Oh yeah, typing in questions has been around since ZORK... but to talk with the G-Man... Alyx... everyone else. Holy ****ing shit THAT WOULD BE AWESOME. And THAT would be a revolution in gameplay and immersiveness.

And you could have easter eggs.

"Hey G-Man, could you strip for me?"
"Mister Freeman, as much as I would enjoy that, I am not authorized to do so."

"Hey Kleinner, whatever happened to Lamarr?"
"Oh, I'm afriad she attempted to couple with a Bullsquid, and well... it ended fruitlessly."

Would be very cool, but we know it ain't gonna happen, lol... oh well :upstare:

"I'm hungry"
gMan:"Here's a pizza!"

pizza pops out of cd drive (it's a mini pizza)

*ignores* fstick (his warning level speaks for itself and it would be uncool to argue with him - we wouldn't wan't to give him the pleasure now would we)

anyway, back ontopic

Nice intro dude, would love to see that in all the pumped up source gloryness. And actually, I love the whole grave thing, and personnaly I would love to have HL³ set on the combine planet itself, seeing loads of enslaved races building huge citadells

Very good, i'm impressed. The only thing I don't like is how you have the Gman saying the destruction of the Citadel was unexpected.

It's quite obvious how HL3 will start
In Big letters in the middle of the screen.
Half-Life 3

Now why'd you have to go and spoil it for me?!

i think the talking to people will be a deffinate possiblity but the will probly make u say stuff in the option menu to recognixe ur voice stuff like that

Alyx: Gordon, will you go take a walk with me?
*Fellows*
Alyx : I have been meaning to tell you this for a long time but I could never find the courage to do so,but I just wanted to know......:p

Sorry about the double post, diden't mean to do that, please delete this post and one of the double posts for me,thanks in advance.

Just because you double posted dosn't mean you're aloud triple post!

You'll start HL3 on a train to a Combine slave camp / stalker making facility. You see many teible things on the way. As you are being directed to the operating room, the glint of a crowbar catches your eye.

So we won't be playing as Gordon in Half Life 3?

ríomhaire said:
Of course you play Gordon. When did I say you didn't.

But why would Gman put Gordon on a train going there? Also i assume the Combine have retaken Earth in this storyline?

VALVe software presents:

Half-life 3

*you hear mumblings, flashes whizzes by the screen, you start recognizing things, scenes from Black Mesa, Source Barney caught mid-sentence in the word Beer, scientists talking to you, walking along clean corridors and distorted voices in the background, then a green flash of the g-man's face, suddenly you see crashes, explosions, flashes of scientists lying in pools of blood, a Barney being ripped apart by a laser beam, the source version of the tentacle gripping the scientist, you start hearing desperate voices screaming for you;
"Get to the surface and tell... no stay back, Gordoooon!... Destroy the damn thing before it gets any larger... Recon move in! What the hell are these things... get topside... for god's sake open the silo doors... I'm sorry to say this Gordon... but you must kill it..." Darkness. Then the low, unmistacable voice of Nihilianth;
"Freeeeeeemaaaaaan"
For a moment, all is quite. Then the g-man's face flashes by again, and now you are walking down the trainstation, seeing Alyx, running from combine and watching Father Gregoy blasting zombies.
"About the beer I owed you... Gordon Freeman, it really is you... Lamarr!... in my office, it was... Gordon Freeman... you haven't changed one iota...we remember the Freeman... Welcome brother... sector 17 overwatch... Gordon! Mossman!... if you see Dr Breen, tell him I said... Dr Freeman... sentient fungi... maybe when I get the time, I'll name one after you... you could bring down this whole citadel, think!..."
*flash, dark and the g-mans voice; "Time, Dr Freeman?" *the darkness stays there, along with a constant ringing tone after all the voices you just heard which slowly fades away along with the darkness*

*you now stand in a big white room. There are no fixtures, no furniture, you can't even say for sure wether there actually are walls. As an opposite of the g-man's exit, now a dark rectangle opens, and out comes the G-man.*

"We meet again, Dr Freeman, we met again... Not to say I wasn't expecting, least to say hoping your services would be required once more but you cannot depend on too much in these troubled timess... I must apologize again for the... swift and unmotivated situations which we have thrown you into Mr Freeman but I can assure there was a great importance in all of your succeedings...
Regrettably, I cannot ease your mind with any concrete answer at this moment, but must again place my faith in your honouring our agreement... I'm sure you will understand. And now... to business..." *flash to the start of Half-life 3*

Alyx : I have been meaning to tell you this for a long time but I could never find the courage to do so,but I just wanted you to know......

"...that we ran some bloodtests on you. I'm sorry, but, you've got prostate cancer. It appears to be due to radiation exposure."

Unfortunatly, this is the most logical openning to HL3. I doubt they will answer many of our questions with it.

Why did G-man send him to a trainstation where he was about to board a train to Nova Prospect?

Well, they might save it for the ending, I doubt they'd give us such a big wank as to tell us absolutely zip in HL3.

Why did G-man send him to a trainstation where he was about to board a train to Nova Prospect?

I think he planned on Barney to get him out... and in your storyline, he is most likely planning on something similar... even as simple as you grabbing that crowbar.

Well, they might save it for the ending, I doubt they'd give us such a big wank as to tell us absolutely zip in HL3.

Yeah, I'm sure HL3 will answer some questions... but I honestly doubt they will be in the G-Man's openning... much as I wish they were.

One thing i'm fairly sure of is that HL3 will open up on some sort of train. Both hl1 and hl2 have. It's like the "g-man sightings", its a half life trademark.

Someone mentioned the idea of someone haxx0ring Gordon out of G-space for an expansion. I was actually considering that as the idea for HL3. I hadn't developed it very far, but it would be a cool way of totally blowing the player's shoes off with the unexpected..."you mean I'm finally free?! what the hell am I expected to do then?"

One possible opening could be Gordon lying face-up on some kind of moving trolley or bed, as his vision fades in and out. Somehwat shoddily dressed doctors and nurses surround the bed as it's being pushed, shouting commands and letting slip bits of information in the process. The attentive player will be able to deduce that Gordon has suffered bad trauma from an otherwise successful attempt to create a gate into whatever pocket plane GMan keeps Gordon in, and steal our hero out.

From there on I don't really have any idea where that's meant to go....or even whether that's the best opening under the scenario I've set out. Possible scenarios could be that humanity actually wants to kill Gordon, fearing the destruction that followed in his wake in the past. Maybe a better story than that would be that for the rest of the game you're actually being hunted by GMan's own never-before-seen people...screw the Combine, they're gone, you beat them, or at least sowed the seeds of their eventual collapse on Earth. HL3 demands a new ultimate enemy...one that's been with you all along...

Valve wont tell us anything in HL3, we will get hints and clues and then figure it out for ourselves.

The attentive player will be able to deduce that Gordon has suffered bad trauma from an otherwise successful attempt to create a gate into whatever pocket plane GMan keeps Gordon in, and steal our hero out.

That would be neat.

Heh: "I'm sorry Gordon; you suffered massive trauma to the throat. I'm afraid you'll never be be able to speak again. We've rigged the HEV suit up with a system that is keeping you alive. You will never be able to take it off again. I'm afraid, in a freak teleporting accident, your crowbar was actually welded to your arm.... along with the gravity gun. You will never be able to go anywhere without them. On the plus side, since you body is now running on suit power, you will never need to rest, eat, drink, or use the bathroom ever again."

So what else is new? :)
