Hi

I have played HL2 4 times through on my computer which only has a Windows 98SE (not going to upgrade as I use Windows only for games). I also have played through the original Half Life (BestSeller version) and I had no problems with crashes in either games. I have an ATI Radeon 7500 card. However when I bought the HL anthology and installed HL, Blue-Shift and Opposing Force I keep getting crashes all the times. It always ends up with that Steam crashes in the end.

Does anybody know why this happens to these games and not HL2?

I have tried latest drivers and directX version etc. but no luck...

At a guess I would say that the box set you bought has been updated to run optimally on todays OS's. You are using a OS that is almost 10 years old. Everything you buy today is made / updated for today's world. For God's sake, please get someone to drag you kicking and screaming into the present.

Also, do the latest drivers even work with win98? I would think at some point, they would concentrate on compatibility with today's OS's, not a ones from a decade ago.

These may or may not be the problem, but I can only wonder at why you are even trying to run stuff like (especially) HL2 on win98.

is there a special reason why you're using windows 98?

my grandma is handicapped and she uses windows 98

Stfu, both of you

You're not in a position to say that he should upgrade.
Here are some general troubleshooting tips that might help you out:

Another possible fix would be to disable A3D sound:

The only thing that has ever crashed me back to the desktop in Steam Opposing Force was when I had A3D sound enabled.
So you might also want to try that.

Also, have you left the games to update?
-->Left-click on the Steam tray icon.
-->Select "Games".
-->Click on the "My Games" tab.

Is the status of the game "100%-Ready" ?

If not, just let it update.
If it is, try validating:
Validate Half-Life
Validate Opposing Force
Validate Blue Shift

Well, they still keep saying that the games should work for Win98. If they don't want to support this OS then fine, just don't write it in the requirements!

As for Win98 I don't see why I should buy WinXP or Vispa as I don't use windows for anything else than some few games from time to time...

There are far better and more modern OSes out there than Windows that a use...

1. Because this is the OS I have from M$

2. Where is the logic here? WinXP is not for handicapped grandmas?
